Almost every new year features some variation on the "off to a violent start" headline after the first night or first week. Some people will never feel safe enough.
January has been very good for the homicide rate so far. We now stand at 9 homicides for the year, less than any time since 2007. If this trend were to continue (unfortunately unlikely), only 164 murders would be committed this year.
This is actually a very feasible number to (potentially) hit someday, as that would account for 10.5 homicides per 100,000, still twice the rate of NYC. The good news is that this lull is affording more time for detectives to investigate, leading to higher clearance rates and catching more perpetrators.
Its really too early to say anything. This city's industrious thugs can make up the difference in the body count over a good weekend.
