Default Is it time to panic over Hurricane Sandy?

When I saw that Sandy name on the list in May I said" Oh thats cute, I know a Sandy" I didn't think it would cause all this...

I only am more concern now because Sandy went from a storm Tropical Storm that might effect us to a strong Hurricane that will effect us, and that changes a lot of the dynamics....

Hurricane Sandy Poses Huge Threat for Area | NBC 10 Philadelphia

n preparation for Sandy, here are some emergency items you should purchase before Sunday in case of a major hit:

3-day supply of drinking water (1 gallon per day/per person)
    Non-perishable food, ready-to-eat canned foods
Manual can opener (in case power is out)
    First-aid kit
    Flashlight w/extra batteries
    Battery operated radio
    Personal care/toiletries
    Prescription medicines
Special items for infants/disabled/elderly (formula, diapers, etc.)
    Eyeglasses
    Whistle to signal for help
So yeah, this feels like deja vu from last year....Just a bit later...

No panicing required. You should always be prepared for a natural disaster/zombie scenario.

No panicking needed, but somebody should call PECO and make sure they're not sleeping, and to at least get their plans in place and have their crews at the ready.

Has there EVER been a snow storm around here worth panicking about? I think because of our relatively mild climate, people in the DelVal region just like to have an excuse to panic about something.

Unless you're at retirement age or have a medical condition, I don't have a memory of even the worst storms posing much of a threat, unless you really hate hanging out in your house for a day.

If people are stuck in their houses we will see the birth rate tick up for next year. During Lee(I live in Harrisburg during the week but have a Hotel room size condo in Center City plus i had a house in NoLibs for nearly 15 years so I have some Philly cred dammit) when i found out my house didn't flood during Agnes everyone went to the corner bar across the street from my house. The city got so mad that we weren't evacuating they shutt off the electric and made us go home. Tons of people came over and we continued the party. So i will have the essentials booze, smokeables and a battery backup for my laptop for music.

Guess it would be a good time to get the branches and leaves from the tree\weed I cut down last week cleaned up, huh? My drain doesn't need help backing up, does just fine on its own!

Does that mean we are on the GOOD SIDE of the storm and NY is on the BAD SIDE?

My strong recommendation is to keep an eye on the one site the mixiboi posted at the top of the thread: phillyweather.net

No, you wouldn't. If you get heavy snow while there's still leaves on the trees, very bad stuff happens. Like this:

That photo is from the "Friday the 13th" storm that happened in Western NY in October 2006. Us native Buffalonians have no problem dealing with snow... but at least wait for the leaves to fall.

As someone who regularly travels to hurricane-prone islands during peak hurricane season, I've become a big fan of the Wundermap:

WunderMap® | Interactive Weather Map and Radar | Weather Underground

It lets you see all the hurricane computer models together on one map. Very useful.

    Maybe a little bit.

Forecasters Warn East Coast About 'Frankenstorm' - ABC News

All the spare parts appear to be coming together to create what forecasters are calling "Frankenstorm," a monster combination of high wind, heavy rain, extreme tides and maybe snow that could cause havoc along the East Coast just before Halloween next week.

Hurricane Sandy, having blown through Haiti and Cuba on Thursday, continues to barrel north. A wintry storm is chugging across from the West. And frigid air is streaming south from Canada.

And if they meet Tuesday morning around New York or New Jersey, as forecasters predict, they could create a big wet mess that settles over the nation's most heavily populated corridor and reaches as far inland as Ohio.

With experts expecting at least $1 billion in damage, the people who will have to clean it up aren't waiting.
Whatever happened to the Bolaris warning system?
"No one wanted to be mayor of Philadelphia. It was a thankless job, which for the first 56 years offered an annual salary of zero. In 1745, two men turned down the position and instead accepted large fines. In 1747, Anthony Morris fled to Bucks County to hide and thus avoid notification of his election. After Morris’s disappearance, a new election was held, and William Atwood was re-elected."
