Most deaths were caused by falling trees and I gotta say I'd be thinking twice while looking up when walking under a big old tree during high winds, and those trees would eventually fall anyway. I've heard of trees falling on people on sunny spring mornings.

Again, you seem to think they all know what the reality is going to be, and some (Fox) are telling the truth more than others (everyone else). I didn't compare the stations so I have no idea the relative hype between them.

But I'm going to take a guess that in your observation Fox was not downplaying the impending storm as much as not overhyping it ?

Ask the families of the people killed by flying tree branches what they think of the hype. (and if you look earlier in this thread, someone with the same attitude as you also mocked the blowing limb theory).

    etc.

I'm also going to take a guess that you think global warming issues are over-hyped by these same experts- the same experts who predicted this storm would hit this area a week ago when it was still down near Cuba and you were tuning into Fox.

Yeah and there are factors that NO ONE can predict until it happens, like the speed of the storm picking up, history of hurricanes shows us that they slow down when they get near the landfall...

Unfortunately for NYC, this wasnt good because this caused high tide and the strongest winds to be over NYC....causing what happen last night...

The rain was NEVER forecasted to be over 15+. 10+ inches was the highest for wherever areas the lower half of the storm was. Philly was that for a while since the storm was suppose to make land far in North Jersey until it decided to go to south Jersey and thus Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia got that brunt of the rain...

Another factor of why flooding wasn't that bad compared to Hazel or even Irene last year...we have been in a drought for the couple of months, and if it wasn't coming off the WETTEST year on record(August's 19 inches of rain and then Irenes 5 inches, which could have been another 10 inches but we lucked out there to) we would have felt the drought hard around here...

So this is why the flooding wasn't as bad...

So yeah, a lot of factors go into things, these are the things you should always have handy when any major event happens...Keep that in mind this winter...

It's not just the feds and taxpayers underwriting poor-choice construction areas but also other policy holders like us.
We've been paying FI for 23 years on an 1872 house that I don't think was ever flooded at least certainly not while we've lived here. Many of the homes flooded down the shore are expected to flood and should have their own system aside from low risk residents who carry the load for them.

Well now you do and I'd advise you become better informed before insulting others opinions. I was also following other scientific sites such as the NOAA and this thread with it's many links and maps considering my house is in the flood plain.

The European computer model had #Sandy forecast nailed more than a week in advance. Why are they better than U.S.? Why America Has Fallen Behind the World in Storm Forecasting - Speakeasy - WSJ
Why America Has Fallen Behind the World in Storm Forecasting - Speakeasy - WSJ

    Excerpt:

Americans should take great pride in the fact that computer weather modeling was invented here, along with weather satellites and other scientific and technological marvels. Sadly, the skill of our computer models fell substantially behind that of other nations some decades ago, and by many measures we are in third or even fourth place today. The overall star performer is a computer model operated by a consortium of European nations; that model accurately predicted Sandy’s track and evolution well before U.S. models caught up later last week.

Yes, your opinion that everyone was purposely overhyping the storm except Fox is ridiculous.

Not really and I learned from it. Check out the Sept 1944 cat 2 hurricane with winds up to 125mph and 40' waves. Scores of houses destroyed, it's ridiculous!

Yeah, when I and a bunch of other bloggers saw that the Euro saw that had a not even organized Sandy hitting the east coast, we all laugh at it..THEN it kept doing it over and over every single run...that was a cause for taking it serious...

The EURO is great at major snowstorms too..We call it "Dr EurNO" because everytime another model had a MAJOR snowstorm hitting the east coast, especially the US model, the Euro didn't see it and it was right 99% of the time...

Sadly that was all last winter....

I wonder if anyone ever told them it was once a pristine wetland marsh before decades of human abuse and pollution.
    Mother Nature remembers these things.
