Unreal that a teacher, of all people, would do this.

If there was a comparison to wearing a KKK tshirt by the teacher then this has got to be some kind of cynical lewis black humor-type rant the teacher went off on than a true conviction surely. Right? Hopefully?

It's no wonder that a lot of kids are so messed up with teachers like this.

So I guess I'm hallucinating those SRC meetings I got to where they vote to terminate various teachers and unionized support staff. My deranged mind makes up all those names listed on those sheets of paper.

the issue in this thread is not if teachers get fired or not, but that this teacher didn't think before speaking; IMO both candidates suck, but a teacher can't blurt just anything to students. Some discipline in behavior is needed. A teacher isn't the students' friend, and can't blab like they are. They are a teacher. If she didn't like the t-shirt, oh freakin well...just proceed with today's syllabus.

(and every field of work has risks and potential to lose the job. Teachers aren't more at risk, nor do they deserve more sympathy. It's a tough time for everyone.)

Philadelphia student says teacher mocked her for wearing Romney shirt

Pawlucy said she decided to wear the shirt after researching the candidate and President Obama and concluding that she was a Romney supporter. Her father, Richard, said she was especially interested in Romney's opposition to late-term abortion.

He said he recently registered to vote as an independent but was not involved in the Romney campaign.

Samantha Pawlucy said that after going into the hall, her teacher called into the classroom a nonteaching assistant who tried to write on the T-shirt with a marker. She allegedly told the teen to remove her shirt and said she would be given another.
Why no mention of the teacher's name in the Philly.com article or NBC10 story?
She doesn't deserve anonymity after what she's done, IMO.
This young girl took an interest in the presidential election, did some research about late term abortions, and decided she liked Mitt Romney. She can't vote yet. Either can her school mates. But she expressed her support of a candidate based on an issue she feels strongly about. Isn't that how our democratic society is supposed to work?
I think this teacher should be fired since she clearly doesn't have an open mind or the ability to encourage teenage students to explore different opinions.

The school could do some damage control by hosting a student-led debate of their own. Then maybe all the other students who chastised this girl for wearing a T-shirt could open their minds and see what the issues are that these 2 candidates stand for.

If there are grounds for a civil rights or freedom of speech lawsuit here, I hope her parents explore that option. This girl seems to have an independent head on her shoulders. We need more kids like this, IMO.

No one should have the right to use their power to silence your political expression. I'm sure their are already systems in place that prevent students from openly supporting the Nazi party or Soviet-style communism, but in my opinion any form of political censorship does more harm than good.

Maybe you should lecture the guy spouting false statements, not the person who "in my opinion" seemed to be defending herself.

IMO, until the teacher can respond or witnesses come forward, it's probably not appropriate to publish the teacher's name.

Teh other very simple matter of fact point is that with how unengaged youth are to elections, the last thing a teacher should be doing is discouraging interest.

There is not a single reason why a geometry teacher should say anything at all about a student wearing shirt with a candidate's name on it - period.

She was just trying to teach the class that "a^2 + b^2 = republicans are racist".

hmm... I wonder if she's a concerned citizen of point breeze.

The last election I was in line at starbucks and these two young adult black girls were in front of me. The were in a good mood somehow a conversation was started. I asked them if they voted and the one looked at me and said i bet you voted for mcclain. I responded, why because i'm white? That's an awfully racist statement. No response but shocked looks.

Then the one girl picked up the over flowing tip jar and put it in her purse. I said awe come on don't do that, she said what? I said put the tips in your bag. Replies What tips?, one then laughed nd left the store the other with money in her bag kept telling me it wasn't there, I said loudly i didn't think Obama would approve of her stealing tips, but the store people didn't hear me. As she went to leave i yelled back to the store people who were making coffee she was stealling the tips. I considered blocking the kid's exit but wasn't sure if she had some kind of weapon.

the point of this story for this purpose was the i bet you voted comment... it amazes me that people think every one votes along racial lines. the second was just what followed, it was unbelievable.
