This one is a little different. Instead of being a snark about things and not posting, I'm going to be a little more serious. I've been inspired by the Art of Manliness and other new masculinity websites/authors and have decided to write my own manifesto. While I'd like lots of people to read it, it's more for me than anyone else. I've already written a few that just need some proofing before I post them - I could talk about this stuff for days on end.

So basically: if you're a modern man sick of the way men are portrayed in popular culture, if you want to bring back the style, urbanity, and humility of previous generations without the mysogyny, bigotry, and homophobia, then check out The Manifesto of the Modern Gentleman.

I like it Dayman. Reminds me of a conversation I had recently about the beer commercial guy. Fits nicely into your critique about how advertising represents your average guy.

I've watched about 3 hours of TV since I returned from Italy in July. Which commercial is this?

Advertising has created this idea of a man and now it's enforced by men who've wholesale bought into it.

It goes out in so many directions - not only how we act, but how we dress and how we think. Thanks for the support.

That is certainly a complement! I'm taking a more philosophical than practical approach to the subject. Also, I'm an urban, libertarian secularist. Mr. McKay has a different perspective which I do not always agree with - but it's usually on minor points and regards religion. The man and his wife have done wonders for new masculinity however. Thanks for reading though!

Sorry to be vague. I was referring to how men are depicted in your typical beer commercial in the past 20 years or so. Stupid, uninterested in listening to women (women whom themselves are depicted as annoying idiots or sex symbols) and etc. It links nicely to the points you made.

Nice angle and looking to check back. I was happy to see a reference (though not explicit) to "Honor" (personal and social), as it has been a hallmark of "gentlemanly character" through history, Seems so many today are demanding "respect" from others when they themselves have no honor to be respectful of. Sorry to soapbox...
