Chicago is in the grips of a deadly gang war. At least 275 people have been killed in the city so far this year and many more have been shot, many of them innocent bystanders to the gang violence. Among the latest victims were 12- and 13-year-old girls shot Tuesday night. They survived. Sgt. Matt Little leads one of the teams in Chicago's Gang Enforcement Unit. There are about 200 such officers in the city-- versus 100,000 gang members.

When I'm feeling down about Philly, Chicago schadenfreude always cheers me up.

The increase in violent crime in Chicago is pretty astounding, but not much worse than ours. Let's put this in perspective: Chicago has about 2.7 million residents, which means if Philly had Chicago's murder rate among 1.5 million residents, we would have had just over 150 homicides so far this year.

One hundred and fifty.

Compare that with the real numbers so far. That's what's shameful.

The only disadvantage Chicago may have is in its gang numbers. To me, it doesn't matter how many or how few gang members Philly has when dealers here are firing randomly into crowds and not one of those in the crowd is talking to police.
