I've never been quite sure what to make of the place.
It's not really a neighborhood place, where you can stop by to grab a quick dinner, because each time I've taken the family, the bill alone is about $100.
But, as a destination place? I can't imagine I'd seek it out if I lived in, say Fishtown.

I've stated before that it's a tough spot they're in: They spent a TON of money buying and fixing up that place, so the burger/sports bar idea isn't going to generate enough profit to keep it in business. But the lack of parking makes it tough to get along as a destination place.

Hopefully, they can find that niche and have a long run, because it is a nice spot and they've been responsible neighbors.

... maybe they should think about turning it into another Pho joint...

I am glad you wrote a note, I know the manager a bit, a really nice guy, and I thought of bringing it up to him, but I decided against it.

Mick is awesome. I still love the Den - I actually went the next night for dinner because my frequent customer card had finally rolled over and we got the food for free. (every $300 you spend - $25 food credit - not a bad incentive)

I just think they need a service overhaul - otherwise I've always loved the beer selection and food.

300, I thought it was 200. Oh well. I am looking forward to trying the new tapas happy hour stuff.

maybe it is 200? My boyfriend usually keeps track of the balance, admittedly.

The chickpea "fries", which were more like fritters, were REALLY good - and a shrimp risotto dish off the "smaller plates" menu was delicious.

It is 300 for the 25. I was there on Friday night, as usual, and had great service with a smile from a waitress who is usually VERY unfriendly. My friend and I were both shocked at the difference. Maybe word finally reached someone.

I love going there to drink, but I definitely prefer sitting at the bar to sitting at a table. God help you if you get seated at the table by the bathroom in the Winter. You'll never get to take your coat off and get comfortable.

How do you go about getting one of these cards? We go there almost every weekend.

I would just ask a bartender for one.

Does the Devil's Den still do flight nights? I would leave my own neighborhood for a flight night...

Yeah, I made it last week for a Weyerbacher night (3 beers, one a one-off limited release that I thought was all gone). They had a Weyerbacher flight but they had two other flights that would have interested me had I not decided in advance to find out what W's Hotel and Fireside were like on tap.

Also liked the sandwich I had, which was a first for me and their kitchen.

i've rolled over my devils den card three times now (yikes) but it's definitely the best beer bar in south phila.
those with DD cards beware: if you don't spend the free $25 rollover in one sitting it disappears, so go with an empty stomach and a few friends.

Went this past weekend. What happened to their fries? They use to be the more natural looking type, not these pale, sad looking sticks. Nevertheless, they still tasted good, but I prefer the old kind.

The food was actually as good as always, but the fries have changed drastically. (Note that this was just a <$10 sandwich, not an entree.) Their fries use to look more like this:

Stopped in here for dinner one night earlier this week, after hearing about the new chef. I usually go for the happy hour specials, more so then the food..

We got there right as happy hour was ending, so 2 of the drafts we originally wanted were kicked. Food was really good- ordered a mussels appetizer, a sandwich off the bar menu, and the risotto off the entrees, all the food was really good and the fries were decent.

Service, not so good. It took about 15 minutes for the server to come to the table, then it felt like 10 more minutes until we got our first drinks. The service was inattentive and slow, and at one point the waitress brought one of us the wrong bottled beer. We didnot attempt to rectify it thinking how long it would take once again. It took 2 hours to get the bill when I feel we could of been out of there in an hour.

We will continue to go back and deal with the slow service because the food is pretty good and I love the beer selection. Next time we plan to sit at the bar, those bartenders are on point.

I was there recently. The food was fantastic! I tried two different kinds of mussels, both were fab but the Aventinus -- Garlic, shallots, leeks, bacon & cream was divine. The other was Traditional -- Lemon, white wine, garlic, parsley & butter.
