ESA in a bottle isn’t, and can’t be, ESA on a handpump the way it was intended to be, but this was, quite simply the best bottle of ESA I have ever had...the Brawler….oh my goodness! This British-style session ale, 4.3%, was just what this Malt Maven has been craving. Neatly balance, smooth on the palate and finishing with malt richness, it jumps right up there on my best new beer of the year list. What was once a draught-only nitro beer is now, in the words on the label, a “Pugilist Style Ale,” but I gotta tell you, it’s more suited for lovers than fighters.

And here’s the real kicker. When Tom Kehoe and the Bartons split last year, the dream for all of us, aside from wishing both sides well, that out of the break-up would come two great Philadelphia breweries,
Jack Curtin’s LIQUID DIET Blog Archive Yards bottles are back.

have to admit, I had an ESA on the engine the other night for the first time and it's as good or better than I remember it. As someone who isn't a big fan of the rowhouse red (not my style) I've been looking forward to the return of Philly Pale (one of the best pales I've ever had, up there with hale's from seattle) but this time of year...ESA. McGlinchey's used to carry the Brawler but when it was cut off from production, they replaced it with boddington's. Any word whether the new brawler will be hand pump or nitrous?

“We felt that we’ve got a nice, older building with a lot of character,” Merchantville Mayor Frank North told me this morning. “A brewpub would be the right thing for that building, and the right thing for the town… We have a lot of young families and a lot of young professionals coming to Merchantville. This would be a place for them to have dinner and relax and help vitalize the downtown.”

For Yards, the brewpub would be an effective means of spreading its brand to New Jersey - a big priority as it expands production. The Northern Liberties brewery is currently working to open a pub in its production facility on Delaware Avenue.

Over 20 years ago my high school classmates and I had fun watching a video about a politician going from festival to festival as part of his day, all the while drinking steins of beer. The video actually showed him driving his car from event to event. We were shocked at how far behind the Germans were in recognizing that drinking and operating motor vehicles don't mix. I guess that they haven't gotten the message over in Jersey either.

Has not changed much billy, I'm doing work on a home for people that are straight from Germany. He tells me that the workers at a plant he use to rep for have a break union break at 10am and eat bread and have a beer. They then have another around 2pm. These guys are working at a steel plant like setting. Dangerous job on it's own without mixing booze.

I wouldn't limit that to Germany. PC's restaurant, down in the concourse, was always filled with steel workers who built the Comcast center, but their 1 or 2 beers with lunch were 40s.

Check out the Yards Brewery tour. We were there last week and were really impressed with how many people were going through. Also the Tasting Room is now fully functional (open 12pm to 7pm Monday through Saturday, Sundays from 12 to 4) and you can grab a pint of the freshest Yards around for $5 a glass.

Last weekend I went with a bunch of East Falls guys to Philly Brewing Company and we had a grand time sampling the beers and touring the plant. I'm looking forward to going to Yard's to compare.
