    Default Best Sandwich in America

In case you have been away or hiding under a rock, the Best Sandwich contest reached its conclusion tonight. DiNic's roast pork was one of the semi-finalists, and the category included 2 wild card entrants. Philadelphia was ably represented at this level by a second sandwich in addition to DiNic's. This was the cheesesteak made at John's Roast Pork and it was nominated by G Love. He recommended ketchup and mayo on it, which, frankly seemed like a bit of overkill.

DiNic's emerged victorious over a mostly delicious sampling of other sandwiches from around the country.

    Congratulations to them.

But of course...don't expect to get near the place until there's a snow storm.

It looked good though, didn't it?

Congrats to DiNic's. There were a lot of tasty looking sammiches on display.

It's had a long line ever since the Man vs Food guy first declared it his favorite.
They were destined to win. He digs it.
I don't even think it's the best sandwich in the building.

My husband and I were watching it together. He was looking at all of the others--the complicated sauces and the ingredients and initially couldn't begin to fathom that DiNic's would place well against most of those at all. And I kept shaking my head saying "nah, he likes the simplicity of DiNic's overall". And eventually it became clear that DiNic's was Richman's favorite. To hubby, a roast pork sandwich isn't all that spectacular since he's grown up on them. I guess it's the same with most of us who've grown up around roast pork and steak sandwiches. He was actually digging John's wild card cheesesteak entrant.

I, however, now have been requested to make the duck confit grilled cheese....

As a Philadelphia immigrant, I love the pork sandwiches around here, from Tony Luke's, to Dinics, to Porky's point. Same with the cheesesteak. And man, Primo is really taking the hoagie to a new level too.

The girlfriend has a friend up in north Jersey that does cuban steak sandwiches. I told her to tell him to open a shop down here because Philadelphians will line up around the corner for a good sandwich, even if that is the only thing on the menu.

So yeah, I think a lot of natives don't realize how awesome the sandwich is. Same way with hot dogs and pizza. I never knew how good I had it back outside of Chicago growing up until I came out here.

I, however, now have been requested to make the duck confit grilled cheese....
And for grilled cheese, head to The Pop Shop in Collingswood. Over 30 different kinds (amongst other things). I believe Bobby Flay did a show there also for one of his challenges. The Pop Shop- Your Hometown Soda Fountain and More - Home Page

Wait a minute. I thought the defunct Vesuvio had the best sandwich in America as named by the Today Show.

    TODAY

Also, these things usually go to the highest bidder. Good sadwiches nonetheless.

HIM??? Got to Jersey? For a grilled cheese? You know him...he's not going anywhere if he's got as good at home. They would have to pay him to go to S. Jersey and have a grilled cheese! Thanks for the laugh!

As for a single item menu--always worked for me. I always figure the fewer items you have on your menu, the higher the likelihood that what you do is really good. And when you mention Chicago hot dogs and pizza--it is a style preference you have since you grew up on that.

The sandwiches in the running for this contest were way more legit than the Today Show thing. Vesuvio's sandwich wasn't even the best sandwich on 8th St.

I ate there a few weeks ago and found it to be just okay. the long lines seem to be affecting their quality. when I want a roast pork for lunch I generally head to jake's that does a whole roast suckling pig every day.

Some still seem to think John's Roast Pork is the best.

I do swear by DiNic's pulled pork though. It is something that I really can eat without the bread and it loses nothing in the translation--in fact it might be better that way.

Every time I've eaten DiNic's I've absolutely adored it. I was very happy to see it win, although it means it will be even more impossible for me to get one now. I got so hungry watching the show last night though. Everything looked fantastic. I kind of have to agree with Richman in that sometimes simple is best. Almost all of the other sandwiches looked great, but they either seemed really messy to eat or relied mostly on a sauce or spread for their real clincher. Still, I would kill to try all of them. That duck confit grilled cheese was indeed amazing looking.

I'll try the pulled pork next time. I can understand that it might not be easy to roast that much pork and keep quality up. they should follow beck's to 30th st.

Given the volume dinics does maybe they could start roasting whole pigs. I had some phenomenal pork in PR froma whole roast pig.

Paesano's Giardina... best sandwich in America (at least for vegetarians)
