so, how did cheesesteak become the defacto philly thing? this is a sandwich city. cheesesteaks, aka dirty meat and cheese whiz, is the least interesting of what can be had here. seems roast pork is among the best you get anywhere among other things.

so what is the history of the cheesesteak? how did it become so prominent?

The cheesesteak is a ruse, concocted by Philadelphians to distract tourists and keep them from eating all of the really good stuff.

my uneducated guess is that its roots lie in either availability of cheap beef or elimination of trichinosis for us pork.

HA! I don't think he realy popularized it though. He made a point of being able to see through the bag... interesting tho. Should have been the roast pork which the city is known for but I guess "cheesesteak" has a ring to it.
