Default A new case of Mad Cow Disease discovered...

Mad cow case confirmed in California

Mad cow case confirmed in California | The Lookout - Yahoo! News

The United States Department of Agriculture confirmed Tuesday that it found a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow from central California.

The infected cow was found as part of a "targeted surveillance system," says John Clifford, the USDA's chief veterinary officer. This is the nation's fourth confirmed case of the ailment commonly known as mad cow disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat parts of the animal infected.

"The animal was never presented for slaughter for human consumption, so it at no time presented a risk to the food supply or human health. Additionally, milk does not transmit BSE," Clifford said. The cow was found at a "rendering plant," which takes sickly or discarded animal meat and recycles it into inedible products.

The animal tested positive for atypical BSE, a very rare form of the disease not generally associated with an animal consuming infected feed.

Wonder why this "atypical" form was found, and if there's one, are there many more?!

And you thought that only happy cows come from California!

Default In dairy cows - no surprise, dairy is the dirtiest

Seriously this is no big surprise, and I'd bet there are way more cases out there. Dairy is dirty. Dairy farmers feed their cows all kinds of crap, including other cows and parts of pigs, etc. Pretty disgusting why they have to screw up what could be a perfectly good grass-fed product just to make a few bucks.

And you don't think similarly egregious business activities happen on farms raising meat? It's all same/similar business after all.

Mad cow disease occurs naturally, but rarely, from what I understand. It gets spread rapidly when cows eat other cows' nervous systems. Then one isolated case gets spread far and wide. It came from somewhere, and ending the practice of bovine cannibalism won't get rid of those cases that have been with us for many, many years.

I've seen you post a lot of stupid stuff on this board in the past, but this has to take the cake. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Of course he doesn't. He' typical of the kind of person who reads a little, distorts the information to suit his own purposes, then attempts to shout down everyone who disputes his crap.

Remember the little kid who everyone disliked in first grade? He smelled funny, wore old dirty clothes and had egg yolk on the corners of his mouth? To seek attention, he'd pick his nose and chase the girls around?

Default take a civics class, then add something to the conversation

Another couple of jokers who never took a civics class and can't tolerate a different opinion other than what they soak up on NBC, CNN or ABC. I know a lot more of CA dairy farms than you think. So feed for some Dairy Cows doesn't involve the use of proteins from cows, pigs and other animals? In CA ? How about adding something to the conversation rather than launching insults and having cry baby attacks. You're both a couple of pant ****ters. Go play on the freeway, your mama's doing some business out on Frankford Ave.

I grew up on a dairy farm. And no the feed does not involve the use of animal proteins. What you are writing is not merely a difference of opinion, it is a distortment of facts. There are a large number of groups that have it in their self-interest to besmirtch the dairy and cattle industry for their own gains, and thus try to continually propagate this nonsense to those who don't know any better.

And I must have missed that specific civics class where they taught us to engage in debate by calling people names and telling them to play in the freeway. This is why other posters on here call you a troll.

I would say this applies more to about 90% of the Democratic Party and Michelle Bachmann...

I also can't help but notice this topic was started by a vegetarian, probably to promote that nutty cause.
If you believe people should work till they die to pay for a government worker to retire at 50, you're a Democrat. Otherwise, you're a Republican. All other differences between the parties are trivial.

Actually they aren't all that similar beyond the fact that they both involve bovines. A dairy farmer is with his animals every day. He memorizes the names and personalities of each one as he is in close physical contact with sensitive areas of each animal (the udder) at least twice if not three times a day depending on how many milkings he can do. Beef farmers put their cattle out to large pastures for long periods of time without much human contact so they can graze. Either way, it is in neither farmer's best interest to mistreat their animals or feed them the kind of stuff that is being suggested. If there are farmers that are doing this, then they are the rare exception to the rule, and their actions are highly illegal and unethical. But this most certainly is not a widespread activity.

Ah I see...that explains a few things. Hidden bias at play.

biased?! I saw a news item and reported it since obviously in this meat-doped forum nobody bothered to take notice.

For the record, I didn't make it political either.

And yes, I'm vegetarian. I don't cry foul when everybody else on this forum posts about the juicy new hamburger joint or the newest steakhouse in town. Nor do I proselytize people to my diet option. How about developing some thick skin... you already turn a blind eye to the meat production industry, might as well develop an armor for skin.

Thanks for this info. If you have some web links you could share I would read up in my free time. What I'm not interested in is vegan-biased literature nor meat-industry biased literature. Just facts as they are.

BTW, Bittman @ NYT has been writing a lot more about vegetarian diet...it's fun to read his blog and also readers' reactions to it.

I wish that the animals we eat were treated well and had nice lives. ate grass ran outside. i make an effort to find food that is grown that way - doesn't always happen but i wish it did.
