    Default favorite "authentic" mexican?

i used to like la lupe until their food went pretty downhill in the last few months. so, in the italian market area, what do you like and where are they located?

my favorites include anything with the salsa verde sauce - especially tongue, love tacos and i especially love seafood if it's done right. i've had a few shrimp dishes that were beyond awesome.

Mexican Restaurant in Philadelphia*-*Los Taquitos de Puebla - Best Mexican Restaurant in Philadelphia

Generally just get their stuff at the Headhouse farmer's market, but I'm itching to head over to their restaurant for the full menu.

The best lengua tacos I've had are from El Paisita at 8th & Jackson. They make an awesome cemitas sandwich too. It's just a grocery with a couple seats.

I enjoy the place at Northwest corner of 9th and Ellsworth. They have great tortas and I often just get whatever their special $5 meals are and always enjoy it. I don't really like their quesadillas though (meager and dry).

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Las Margaritas in the far northeast...

I've gone all the way up there just for the food.

Great food, but when I mentioned it in another thread a few years ago, I was slammed because it wasn't "authentic" enough, despite the fact that it's 100 % Mexican owned and operated. It's more cal-mex, compared to some of the places mentioned here.
Personally, I like the Cal-Mex better. At least the items on my plate are identifiable. Just my own personal preference.

I second Los Taquitos, and can add Jose's at 10th & Buttonwood. I usually hit Jose's because it's closer to me (and they deliver).

I like Montezuma, on 9th just south of Washington. The barbacoa (lamb? goat?) tacos on the weekend are great and they bring a soup with it that is also really nice. I think it's the broth from roasting the meat mixed with rice, chick peas, carrots, celery, etc. Their green and red salsas are also good.

Las Margaritas is good, but was probably more authentically "Mexican" than it is now when it was a small BYO at Bustleton and Tyson. Jose's is usually our default place and we tend to like it much better than most of the 9th St. spots. It's a dive-y, hole-in-the-wall and so good!

Taqueria La Raza at 227 W. Allegheny is fantastic. It is very authentic. Their burritos are awesome.

Las Margaritas in the NE is pretty good too.

And she's at it again... this spammer's posts remind me of the old SNL skit with Chris Farley & Adam Sandler where Farley is the wife who totures her husband with readings from the Zagat guide.

If you head to New Hope for the day and looking for quality authentic Mexican I recommend Tortuga's Cocina. Just walk over the bridge into Lambertville.
