Just to clarify, these Amtrak trains have bathrooms on board, unlike SEPTA? Important consideration on a brewery crawl.

popped into bube's. i didn't eat, but the old buildings really lend this place a nice atmosphere

Lancaster Brewpub is typical of a brewpub, IMO. nice, semi-industrial. decent food, the place was packed on a cold wed. night. I would recomend going here for the food, of course, but if you're coming for the beer, it's a nice enough place and not too far from the station (there were cabs waiting at the station too)

In Harrisburg there's ABC. (Appalachian Brewing Co.)

Oops I see you have that one. I like that place. Dondre when you were there do you remember if they have the beer sampler trays like Lancaster Brewing Co does?

Back in the day I put together a Pirate Show with Bube's owner Sam that we did a couple of times a month in the catacombs ... money wasn't bad and making 'corporate dinner parties' walk the plank was even better.

updated to include the coatesville brewpub. I've been to tired hands, good beer. it's an interesting place, they basically are trying to run a bar but instead of kegs they have storage tanks full of their own beer. it would be an interesting trend if it caught on. for those who like to imbibe and not drive, it's an easy walk from the train stop (both SEPTA and Amtrak of course). all on the list are walkable from the station though victory and the ones in lancaster are probably a 20 minute walk.

ABC in Harrisburg has a great space upstairs to see bands. I'm going to see a good bluegrass band called Cabinet there this Saturday. Of course i live in Harrisburg during the week and only go to my hotel room sized condo in Center City when i can. While ABC's beer isn't the best the old industrial building they restored is incredible and the live music is fun.

This sounds cool, but I can't imagine hopping on and off Amtrak is cheap or reasonable to accomplish, since there's only 8 Keystones on weekdays and 5-6 on weekends.

Also, your first link is broken.

I had to give Tired Hands the evil eye the first time I walked in, because they have a few Calagione-esque gimmicks like snail-shell stout. It's a nice place, though, particularly for the suburbs.

The stout was 80th-percentile good. I was hoping for some hint of escargot, at least for novelty's sake, but insofar as there was any, it may have been the power of suggestion. My girlfriend raves about the homemade bread & butter, though I didn't see anything special about it.

I'm completely "meh" about Tired Hands. Their beer is good, but nothing really stands out, and they all kind of taste like variations on an over-hopped saison. The place, the beer and the food just annoys me for some reason.

I don't like the name either. There's a bar down in Baltimore, though, whose name I adore.

that's not even close to true, it's 7-8 on the weekend and 14 per weekday. it probably isn't reasonable to hop and and off but the original purpose was just to let you know you can visit any of these breweries by train. I'd be for some kind of day pass though, would be nice.
I didn't find tired hands annoying, their beer was good, not great. I liked their stout (though I'd guess the beers change frequently). it's real innovation seems to be concept, not a nanobrewery and not a big brewpub...a brewpub the size of a normal bar. if it were me, I'd be baking pizza instead of bread. the owners are actually city residents.
Offense-I've found the food lacking at thr sidebar in West Chester but the beer list was the same level you'd expect in the city at a place like the standard tap.

Okay, you had the stout. Did you taste snails? I can't tell if it was my imagination or not.

I'm going to guess that what annoys Volanova about Tired Hands is that they like to toot their own horn a lot. Even their name is a not-so-subtle way of soliciting admiration for all the amazing things they do. It can be hard to enjoy yourself in a place like that.

I love the idea of this beer train, and not just out of self-interest. It would be awesome if the commonwealth got Amtrak and the breweries together to work out some kind of deal. Logistically it might pose a few obstacles.

I don't recall there being anything about snails on the board, maybe it had changed by then. they did push the R5 pub crawl which is a neat idea (and not unlike this thread)...and I believe they pushed it. I don't much like the name either but the concept is interesting. there's always a fine line between pride and snobbery. I have no doubt the owners did put a lot of work into the place.
I agree, it would be cool if the breweries could work with PennDOT on such a scheme. in fact, I'd love to see a day pass on the line. it would promote inter-regional travel and hopefully put more butts on some weekend trains.

They only add the shells to supply calcium to drop the pH in the brewing process. It's actually very clever, seeing how oysters were often used for the same purpose (and still are in Yard's Love Stout.) You may be able to discern a touch of mineral from the shells, but I'll leave that up to that ratebeer nerds.

Vegans can't drink many beers due to things like isinglass for fining.

    Sucks to be them.

Just think of all the yeast that were murdered for that beer.

Tired hands is different from what you expect in a brew pub (20 oz pours, common beer styles, burgers & fries) so it might take a little while for some to "get" it.

I wonder if the owners live in the city because the suburbs are getting crappy.
