Ok i stopped by on my way home from work. It's ok but not worth all the hooplah.
I purposely ordered traditionally - hamburger, french fries and a chocolate shake.
The burger itself was fine, the roll seemed as mushy as wonderbread - not great. They had relish which was good so ketchup mustard and relish. The fries were ok at best. Would have been better with some malt vinegar but kind of generic and plain. Seemed oddly sweet. The shake was very good. In a half size container but you wouldn't have wanted any more.
It was $11 total. not bad but NOT GOOD. if the roll was crusty and the fries more flavorful it would be better. but certainly not better than many other places. For that neighborhood it was a good value though. There isn't anything that would make me want to go back. There was no wait but people blocked the door reading the menu so it was hard to get in and the guy at the front door didn't keep it clear, i almost kept walking by. There are the typical cattle herd ropes to funnel people in and out. maybe it is a disney ride.
All in all, it did not live up to the hype. It was just ok.
I miss my cleaners.

Cool review.
I often say to friends that a problem with chains in Philly is not the chain, but the workforce. After opening day? You'll deal with the same idiots and management as a craphole in the gallery.
Shake shack isn't that great to begin with; add jerkoffs waiting to get back to west Philly, management waiting to get back to jersey, and simple steps like wrapping buns to keep them good get lost.
I went the other day at lunch and the line was no worse than Five Guys or 500 degrees. I liked the burger better than 5 Guys but the fries were no where near as good. I still think 500 degrees is the best fast food burger in philly.
and your porn store; ) my barber ended up across the street, actually has more customers, and shake shack fixed the sewage problem that had been affecting all the buildings. win-win. the fries I had in ny were crinkle, and the best version of crinkly fries I've had..unfortunately, I don't much care for crinkle fries at all.

Speaking of fast food hamburgers, has anyone tried the new kosher burger joint?
As if NYC was going to teach the fattest city on the planet anything about making a good burger
Have to go with the hype. I thought Shake Shack was excellent. I had the SmokeShack Burger. The burger was slightly thicker than the typical fast food burger. It was slightly pink in the middle and extremely juicy. The chopped cherry peppers and sauce were delicious. And the bacon was not the typical, greasy, chewy bacon found in fast food restaurants. It was crisp and substantial. The bun I thought was good. It tasted buttery and complimented the ingredients very well.
Fries were okay for crinkly cut and the shake (black and white) was good.
And I am not one to follow the masses with hype. I tried 5 Guys a few times and was not at all impressed. Decent at best.
It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't get a decent fast food burger in Center City and I'm ecstatic that we now have a few options and I'll gladly welcome more. We can all pick our favorite and be happy that we actually have options.
I tried it for the first time yesterday. At 11:30 there was no line so i was able to order immediately. I got the single cheeseburger without any type of sauce on it so that i could taste the meat which was ok but nothing special. The bun was very good. I also had a chocolate shake which seemed more like frozen custard rather than one freshly made with real ice cream. The staff was was very attentive, but did not make up for a so-so experience. i don't see what all the hoopla is about and i definitely won't rush back.
I'm with you. while shake shack isn't worth the hype (it's virtually impossible given the hype), it's easily the best fast food burger in town. I tried the smoke shack burger yesterday and while I liked it, I'm perfectly happy with the shack burger at $4.55. I can't see myself waiting in line for the burger but should the lines die down, I'll certainly be back for what is the best sub $5 burger in town..and I had a beer with it and watched some of the phillies game.
I'd rank them:
shake shack
five guys
the rest
up there with shake shack is spot's classic burger for $6.
