    Default NoLibs Street parking

Considering moving to NoLibs. Wondering if people can give me some input on Street Parking in the neighborhood. Is it a real hassle with a permit? How close to your home are you usually able to park after work? Is the 2hr parking an issue when u have visitors?

    Thanks

This varies widely based on the street you are considering. As a rule of thumb, parking ease increases with distance from 2nd and Poplar and numbered streets are often easier than small side streets - but there are many exceptions, of course. Regardless of street, PPA is still vigilant, so if a spot requires a sticker, you will get nailed for a violation.

If you have a more precise location in mind, let us know.

    Thanks,
I believe we are talking 4th North of poplar.
Walking around I saw some blocks with varying signs (i guess this is mostly a concern for visitors). a couple blocks had no parking signs, some 2 hr parking up to 10 some up to midnight, some except sunday, some except sat and sunday. Maybe I am thinking about it too much, but it seems like if you are going to have visitors it can be a pain with them having to move cars. I guess this is a problem anywhere in the city, except for example where I live now, the 2 hr parking is until 630.
    Thanks for any more input.

4th st. is a bit easier than most for parking. Your guests should be able to find satisfactory parking within a short walk of 4th & Poplar.

More of a heads-up than a doom-and-gloom pessimist post, but bring a Club if you have one or buy one for your car, especially if you have a mid-90's Honda. I don't think car break-ins are any more common in this part of the city than anywhere else--unless you have one of these Hondas. The big thing is wheel theft followed by break-ins and of course full-on theft.

Good Heads up. I have had my fair share of smashed windows/thefts both in and out of Philly. Hopefully I have learned my lesson. I have an 04 Acura so maybe I should be concerned with theft. Maybe I should consider wheel locks and a club... an ounce of prevention...
just made my last payment on my car. Would suck to have to start new payments.

That is a good point. Vehicle break-in, theft, and wheel theft is running rampant in NL these days. Check Everyblock as well as the NL Message board for more details. There were several times that cars were up on blocks on 4th st. You can't leave even a penny visible in your car. Beware.

The doom and gloom is making me rethink things.

If you're going to let some car break-ins dissuade you from living in the city, then you shouldn't live here. While they're common, it's not like everyone here has had a car stolen or vandalized or trashed. When I lived in Old City (2 years), my car received numerous beatings from drunken Jersey frat boys, had the dash ripped out, and was eventually stolen.

8 years in Northern Liberties and nada. Knock on wood.

Just take necessary precautions and you should be fine. If not, that's what insurance is for. Just relax.

Just go to the new super fresh for foil to make your own tin foil hat. You'll then be protected, and fit in with the doom gloomers.

No doom and gloom, just facts. Don't let anyone try to tell you that you should "move to the suburbs" or that sh!t just because you have a legitimate question about the hassle of car security. That's the dopiest retort I ever heard, and it smacks of people trying to vie for some street cred because they grew up in Jersey or Lower Merion and now rough it out in the hood like a tough guy. Whatever.

You say you currently live in the city? Go to EveryBlock or the NL Message board and do a comparison on the crime stats with your locale to see for yourself. If your neighborhood is not entirely comparable to NL, then compare NL to Fairmount, a neighborhood that should be similar. I get these stats in an RSS feed. Virtually every day is littered with reports like this.

If you are diligent, use the club, and buy wheel locks, you will likely skirt the problem - but rest assured, your car is going to be cased nightly.

It's just a fact. I live in NL. I know. And I care. Good luck.

You're blowing it out of proportion.

The police districts there are well aware of the situation and are keeping an eye on it. I do believe they've even made a few arrests in the matter...check the NL board to see for yourself:

NorthernLiberties.org • View forum - Northern Liberties Message Board

Also, like I said originally, the majority of the targets have been mid-90s Hondas--Accords and Civics. You're already ahead of the game if you're not driving one of them, but a Club and a set of very sturdy wheel locks should cost less than $60 combined and will be more than enough.

Gorilla Automotive Products - Lug Nuts, Wheel Locks, Auto Security, Wheel Accessories

Lock your car, don't leave anything out and you should be fine. It's not like NL is the car theft capital of the world, it just so happens that it's been going on a lot lately. It happens everywhere, but I'm not reading "everywhere's" message boards to see if they still have their wheels or not, so it's also a matter of what we're seeing personally.

Like others have said...it's the City. Keep it in mind and live accordingly.

OK. Just facts. In the 'everyblock' example you cited, a club would not help in a rash of 'theft from vehicle' incidents. And two vehicle thefts? We're a city. It happens... just like tin foil hat wearers on the innerweb.

Facts? Relative to what? We told him he needs wheel locks, a club, and an alarm. Normal precautions. He's now put out and intimidated by those extraordinary measures, which cost what, $100 bucks? Sounds like he wants to live in a gated community somewhere, and I agree, that's not here. Good luck. I would never let a little smash and grab deter me from living in a vibrant area, but to each his own.

Perhaps my sarcasm was not obvious for you. I am only really concerned with 2 things; finding a parking spot and my wife walking from it home safely.
Ive dealt with about 4 car break ins in my day.....

Actually, the thread became ridiculous when someone with a tinfoil hat began exaggerating common city problems, and to prove it demands that we go to everyblock to see a relatively minor list that was scattered throughout a time period.

Once again, Philly speaks completely ruins an honest thread. I'm surprised this didn't deteriorate into an argument about the neighborhood boundaries of NoLibs.

How do you know they're being honest?! Maybe they're virtually casing the area to steal more cars!!!!!!
