Anyone else have a problem with people pan handling outside of gas stations/convience stores? I always am uncomfortable with this and can't understand why the establishment doesn't ask them to move on!

I am, which is why I only get gas there during daylight hours, though for the most part, I try to avoid buying gas there altogether as a result.

If that is gas station that is right on the corner of Del Ave and Spring Garden, I was there years back early on a Saturday night. We got some gas and friends ran inside for the ATM to get some cash for a night out.

This guy was begging for money but providing that very needed service of holding the door for you as you went in and out. I don't know if people were intimidated or just generous, but in 5 mins (and it was a busy 5 minutes) I did not see 1 person not give him at least $1. It was very rewarding for him to say the least.

I never knew this.

I'm there nearly every day waiting for the 43 before class.

On Fri and Sat nights, there are always 2 cops stationed in the store. If you park your car there for more than 10 minutes, they have it towed. On weeknights, go at your own risk. PS, gas is ridiculously expensive there.

What does aggressive begging have to do with this story? It didn't mention anything about aggressive beggars???

I remember lots of pre- and post-club nights stopping there. Never felt particularly unsafe though.

The male strip club was right there. It was quite entertaining to see what the girls were wearing on their way to the strip club. They were practically naked.

Yes I do...I avoid places where this happens...especially if I feel the business is aware of it and allows it to continue.

I've been by that station ten thousand times and I've never stopped there, it looks too ghetto or something. I can't put my finger on it ...

That whole area is a little Sketchy - I drive by there regularly on my way home from the Big Box Stores down on Columbus. I've stopped at the station in daylight and it just seems rundown but not threatening. But there have been a handful of times when I have passed that area late at night and it is a real nightmare - you have the strip club, a bunch of low-brown nightclubs of various sorts in the area, the biker hangouts up toward 2nd and 3rd, and the general Cruising Zone all up and down Spring Garden. Couple that with the derelicts and misfits who hang out (and sometimes live under) I-95 all up and down the Columbus Boulevard corridor and you have a recipe for a place that makes me want to roll up the windows and move along briskly.

No, The whole area is not Sketchy. Aside from becoming crowded late night when it bars close there is very little crime. I lived just down the street for several years, still own property, and can't recall any real issues. And the strip club is never a problem. Your perceptions are wrong.

"Sketchy" IS a perception, right or wrong. And in many respects, perception is reality. If people don't feel safe and welcome, they will stay the hell away. That's the way it is. The area is a seedy-looking dump. It will take an enormous effort to make it anything else.

While I tend not to pay any mind, I just couldn't believe the one black guy at the Wawa on Delaware Avenue is actually rich. He showed me his money and told me that it was our secret.
