Default Neighbor and I had our recycling cans stolen last night (29th and Poplar)

So last night, around 7pm, my neighbor heard a noise in front of our house (29th and Poplar) and opened the door to find that someone had dumped the contents of our recycling cans all over the sidewalk and stole the cans. These aren't the normal recycling bins - we both use standard trash cans with recycling labels on then. But here's the weird part. We each had multiple cans in front that consisted of both trash AND recycling (2 cans each of recycling and 2 cans each of trash).

They only dumped/stole one recycling can from us and left the others. However, each of the cans that they stole had the bar code sticker that gives you rewards for recycling.

We're not sure if this was random "vandalism" (like knocking over potted plants) or if the cans with the rewards program stickers are valuable. It's not like they can access our rewards as we all have our own account/login credentials.

    So WTF?

I heard, what sounded like, recycling being dumped onto the street(29th) around 5am. Any chance someone may have thought the cans belonged to them? I've found my missing cans(clearly marked with my house #) in front of someone's house on trash day. I dumbed the contents onto their porch, and took back my can.

I've lived in other states where there is the bottle deposit. You get tons of down-troddens walking around "canning" to redeem the cans and bottles. What's nice about it is that it really cuts down on trash and pan-handling. As to your situation, I have no idea. Maybe someone thought there may be some left over booze in some of the bottles.

There was some left over beer in the bottles as we just had a birthday party this week. But they DUMPED the contents of the can on the street. They only took the dirty empty trash cans.

Metal or plastic? Could be scrappers.

I would have considered that had they been metal. These were plastic. So it's just stupid kids or annoying petty thieves.

I'm pretty certain that if you have signed up for the "RecycleBank" program, then they don't actually scan your barcode. They just add up the amount recycled in the entire neighborhood, and then divide it by the number of people signed up for the program.

At least I think it's something like that.

at about the same time, i was returning from walking my dogs, when i came across a (homeless) man, pushing a grocery cart with three or four trashbags filled with cans and bottles. this was at Ogden and Myrtlewood. i don't remember seeing any bins though.

    Default Recycle sticker

Don't worry about the recycle sticker. You can call or email the Recycle Bank and get another sticker sent to your home. You will still maintain all of your accumulated points. I recently moved and had to deal with obtaining a new sticker... and it was sent within a week or so.

My trash can was stolen a few weeks ago from 29th, just a bit north of Poplar.

Small things like this have really added up and as a result, I've stopped picking up trash and will be moving out of this neighborhood soon. I really can't deal with ignorant neighbors and ghetto trash much longer.

FWIW, they don't scan the barcode - no need. The sticker has a radio frequency ID tag which is read by the truck.
