Nutter is gearing up for higher office and they win elections by popularity. Whether it's the local or national level, popularity and "likeability" are more important than silly things like costs, police detail , and safety. They might have put a fence up around the perimeter but that ain't gonna stop the socially inept/psychologically brain dead bastard children from coming down the week before school and causing trouble. But who cares? Jay-z coming! Residents of Fairmount, you've been warned.
I'm not too concerned. I would like to know what the total estimated costs are to the city however.
Hotel rooms at a premium for Made in America festival
Possible benefit? I'm not sure if I buy it yet.

He wants higher office so he is trying to piss people off? judging by you and a lot of others, this concert has more (or at least more vocal) detractors then people that are excited.
I think the benefit of the concert is getting some people to visit philly that otherwise wouldn't. As someone who has lived in NY and Boston, I have friends coming to visit me in Philly. It's the first time many of them have been here and they are amazed at how great it is.
Getting people in the city, maybe they see how close/cheap it is and decide to come back again.
Ok. Fair analysis but if this were NY or Boston, the event would most likely be held at Madison Sq Garden and the Fleet Center respectively. Having this event on the fringes of Beirut the weekend before school starts is not going to impress tourists/visitors if the same sh*t happens that happened over 4th of July. This is coming from someone who had out-of-town visitors from Boston on the 4th when the sh*tshow went down. A more appropriate place would have been the Wells Fargo Center, Penns Landing, Riverfront Stadium in Camden, etc and not the Parkway. I hope it goes without a hitch.
sorry to say this but that is absolutely not the case. I don't mean this only to you but so many people have said "put it at the linc" or something similar. This is multi-stages within one area. It would NOT be better at any of the places you listed. You want a comparison event? look at chicago and lollapalooza in chicago. That is what we are comparing it to. If you want another idea in Philly then I would guess FDR park would (maybe) have worked. But that is out of the way for many people. The idea is that it is in the city center... you party all day, then get dinner, drinks etc, and walk to your hotel room. Getting on a subway kind of kills the vibe.
This year Lollapalooza had like 50+ after shows total, at different venues throughout the city. That is money in lots of people's pockets.
I myself drove to delaware for the Firefly festival in July. It was the first time I have been there and it was only because of the music festival. And what did I spend in Delaware? I don't even think I bought gas in the state. In this case bringing in several thousand people into hotels, restaurants etc is a big deal... especially as its a crowd that might not come otherwise for museums or the liberty bell.
And if this was in NYC or Bostan..it would NOT been inside a arena! you don't do these events in arenas(or stadiums!
In NYC, it would have been in Central Park, Battery Park, or Some Jersey location....
In Boston, it would have been..well I don't know...But looking at google, maybe Public Garden....But knowing them, they would use that dumb Green Monster.

I've been hiding under my bed since they've opened the gates. Has civilization ended yet? Since there wasn't any snow in the forecast I forgot to stock up on bottled water and dry goods and now I'm running dangerously low on milk and eggs. Is it all 28 Days out there or what?

City worker protesters make their own noise
Another reason they wont ever get their cake....An unsettled labor dispute angled for attention this afternoon outside the three-stage venue on the Parkway hosting the inaugural Made In America festival as dozens of members of District Council 33, the union for the city's blue-collar workers, shouted "No Contract, No Peace."
Union president Pete Matthews said Mayor Nutter was staging the concert to burnish his national image while not doing enough to take care of business in his own back yard.
"We believe this is Mayor Nutter's coming-out party before the Democratic National Convention on Monday," Matthews said. His members have gone without a contract - or a raise - since 2009, as have city workers who belong to the white-collar union, District Council 47. Nutter's move to appeal an arbitrator's decision to grant city firefighters raises has further added to his labor woes.
Nutter became president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors this year, making him a favorite pick as a talking head on national TV shows and many pundits wonder whether he will run for a higher office.
A few concert-goers snapped pictures of the protest or accepted fliers that read, "Mayor Nutter holds a Budweiser 'Made in America' concert hosted by a beer company owned by a foreign company!" Budweiser - that's the King of Beers to you - is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev N.V., which is headquartered in Belgium.
Nutter has said he wants to negotiate a contract with the unions but needs them to agree to cost savings.
The protest dissolved and the music soon took center stage, with Maybach Music Group working its rap sounds on Rocky Stage as the third act of the day.

One good thing for folks in the area that like to bike/run/etc on West River Drive - now is a great time to do it as it will be closed down all the way to Falls Bridge like all weekend.
