Default Spring Garden St. tunnel under Eakins Oval

It's been closed off for months now. Anyone know why and when it will reopen?

Actually I think it reopened recently, which will be sporadic. It's due to the reorganization of the entrances over at the PMA. They are creating a new space for the loading dock on the west side which is directly over the exit of the tunnel on the river side, so it has been closed off during (and around) construction.

I see traffic exiting the tunnel, when I transit the SG Bridge.

Thanks for info. Must be a coincidence that it's been closed every time I've been by there recently.

i think they have it closed weekdays between 9-4; while they have the crane there placing the stone. They keep it open during the morning and evening rush hours.

Its been open sporadically for several weeks. Typically earlier in the morning -- its clearly related to the construction on the other side at the Art Museum. I would imagine when that is complete it will be open full time again

I attempt to take it once or twice a week around 6 or so. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to its being open or not. It's also not obvious until you're right on it, which is a pain in the ass.

I grew up in Philadelphia and I recall the tunnel having two lanes open. My dad would only ever take the right-hand lane out of fear that someone from the other side would somehow get in going the wrong way. I moved away in 1997 and when I returned in 2008 I found that one of the lanes was closed. Does anyone know what transpired to close one lane? Was my dad's fear grounded?

This! They really need to put up signs when it's closed.

I never took the tunnel much but I think the right hand lane was the one that would flood constantly.

I believe it's an old trolley tunnel.

About ten or fifteen years ago (soon after it was rehabbed after a flood) an oversized truck damaged some of the supports in the right lane. It never reopened. I don't think the city even considered repairing it.

P.S. I'm with your dad, I couldn't force myself to use the left lane until the right one closed.

I don't see how that would be possible with the belongings of so many homeless people strewed around down there. I always considered the right lane to be subsidized housing.

I drive by there around 7:15 - 7:30 a.m. M - Fri. Except for about 2 days last month, it has consistently been closed at that time in the morning.
