In the McKena's/Brown Street Pub thread there were some questions and comments about the 2300 block of Brown. I'd like to share the collective memories of my classmates.
The NE corner of 24th & Brown was a Ukrainian Cooperative Grocery Store, as of the 50's when their Third Wave of immigration arrived. Fairmount has been a focal point since the pre-WWI days, as was the area near Franklin & Brown. To the east of the Coop, there was a tailor shop, a Barber shop run by a guy named Pretzels, and the NW corner of Bucknell had another tap-room. When that tap room was renovated, I was somewhat surprised, but assumed they wanted to capitalize on the Zoning.
The NE corner of Bucknell had the Trident Savings & Loan. the NW corner of Judson had Karbowski's Bar, now a residence. Earlier maps showed Karbowski's to be zoned as a hotel.
Someone recalls a watchmaker in the middle of those two. I'll speak with a parent on Ringgold about that.
Speaking of conversions and rehabs; one of the best conversions of a store to a residence is 1900 Fairmount. That corner store was the Nicely Tool Company, sort of a smaller Silvo Hardware (100 blk of Chestnut), where I bought nails for my nail guns. The Hess station on that SE corner is a nice residential use of a former commercially zoned property.
