Hey all,

Most of the ground around my house is shaded, so I normally plant impatiens. One of my neighbors warned me about a fungus that's hitting them, and I noticed that my local Lowe's didn't have any in stock. Anyone have any recommendations for alternatives? I've always liked planting them because they're low maintenance and do well in the conditions I have around the house.

ants living in potted geraniums? Tiny red mites on sills?

Is it possible that ants could set up residence in pots of geraniums that I manage to keep alive from year to year on my deck. I have a bad problem with ants coming in to the house in the summer, and the only place I see them coming in is from a windowsill in my back shed, but it's not an troop invasion; they just start showing up individually there before they eventually descend to the kitchen floor and counter tops and every where else that I'm not absolutely 100% clean (which I never am). Could they be living in these pots? I have seen them going back and forth on the deck between pots so either it is a nice home or there is something about geraniums that they like as food. Any ideas?

The other pest problem I found today was in cleaning the Philly filth out of my front window tracks. I sprayed a little 3 and 1 oil to try to get the windows to move easier and suddenly saw tons of miniscule red things running around. If they are red spider mites, what are they doing in my windows? I thought they were a plant pest.

I'm beginning to hate home owner ship, after 40 years. Think I'll go live in a cave somewhere !

Who puts bathroom vents in? My plumber says not him, and suggests an electrician. The bathroom is in the 2nd floor of a 2 story, flat roofed row house. Does the vent go thru the ceiling-roof or thru the side of the building (It isn't joined to the neighbor at this point)?

BTW is it code that you must have a vent in every bathroom? I seem to remember hearing that if you have a window, it wasn't necessary. I have a window, but it's never open, so it's rather pointless (for any purpose).

Thanks.

Who would I talk to about this? An appliance repairman?

I just noticed darkish discolorations inside my electric dryer of some years vintage. There are some swirling type marks on parts of the drum (I think that's what it's called. The part that rotates), and some dark spots, what I would call scorch marks, on the inside back where there is a piece with holes in it. I don't know if this just appeared or has been there a while and I didn't notice it, but I'm afraid to use the dryer now.

There were some online answers that this is a blockage of the vent caused by lint build up, and that would fit because I have 5 cats and use the dryer a lot to get the cat hair off bedding, but even if this is the problem, I have no idea what to do about it, and am not physically able to pull the dryer out to check anything in the rear. Who is the right kind of guy to do this kind of job and is a clogged vent likely to be the problem or something else?

Thanks for any ideas. I need that dryer back ASAP.

Are there very many rowhomes in Philly that sport a small (one-person? hydraulic?) elevator? How much would it cost to retrofit one? Beyond cost, is it even technically feasible?

Hard to find a rowhouse in Philly with a guest bed/full bath on first floor, so the need to climb stairs (or rather avoid climbing them) arises.
