Hey Everybody!

I just bought a house that falls directly between Northwood Park & Frankford High School. We haven't gotten to do much exploring around the neighborhood yet, so I wanted to see if there was anyone around to give us the low-down!

We've walked/drove around some of the neighboring blocks and took a homey/neighborhood feel from it. The possibility of a decent-sized house with a real yard was too tempting to say no to! We're moving from South Philly and will both taking the MFL in to 30th Street for work. When walking around, the MFL station was really the only spot I came up on that had a real shady feel to it.

I don't know much about the area at all. I've had some people tell me we'll be in Northwood, others insist it's Frankford. Where do the dividing lines fall?

Are there any good restaurants, delivery spots we should try?

Are there any neighborhood organizations in the area?

I'm looking for any and all info I can find.

Thanks everybody!!

What I Learned from 18 Months in Oxford Circle

As those of you who know me or follow me online know, my sojourn in the Northeast came to an abrupt and sooner-than-expected end March 1.

I...

As those of you who know me or follow me online know, my sojourn in the Northeast came to an abrupt and sooner-than-expected end March 1.

I already knew before I moved up this way that Scoats runs the coolest neighborhood taproom in the city, and maybe even the country - and I am going to have to make my way back over to check out his place in Fox Chase. (Fortunately, I live along the route of the 18 bus, which lays over just below it.)

But I learned a lot more in my time in the Northeast. One thing I learned is that the area - or at least parts of it - is far more diverse ethnically than those living outside it may suspect. That, from what I understand, is a relatively recent development, and one that some oldtimers have a hard time swallowing still.

But it is a sign - a sign that the Northeast continues to play the role it played for at least two generations prior to the arrival of the immigrants who have given the area its diversity. That role is one that neighborhoods in a number of our peer cities have surrendered - and, it appears, that a number of Philadelphia neighborhoods also no longer play.

As a result, the Northeast remains one of the two places where the future of Philadelphia continues to unfold. The other is Center City, but everyone knows its story. I'm not sure everyone knows the Northeast's, and I'm just presumptuous enough to believe I can tell it, or at least a piece of it, after only 18 months there.

What people may also not know is that the Northeast and places like it are endangered places in the modern American urban taxonomy. As the middle hollows out of our socioeconomic layer cake, neighborhoods like it face two possible fates, neither totally agreeable: gentrification or immiseration.

We'd be the poorer for both - literally, in the latter case. I explain why, or try to, in my latest essay for Hidden City Philadelphia:

The Green Grass of the Middle Class | Hidden City Philadelphia

I welcome your thoughts on whether I got the story right.

My son is looking for a new place. His landlord sold the building where he's rented for the last 3 years. We've been looking in Bensalem, Levittown, etc. but the complexes there are either really expensive or really, really rundown. I used to find apts/duplexes in the Northeast Times. Is that still published? All these online sources just lead you to the same complexes.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

It appears that SmokeEaters (a bar which despite it's problems in the past, I found to be relatively pleasant) is closed for good. I've heard through the grapevine that the owner was losing $ hand over fist, which isnt' terribly surprising considering anytime I was in there, the bartenders were not using the register to ring up sales. I think that's a great location for a bar, so I'm hoping someone comes in and takes over, with better oversight and a good staff....The bartenders weren't always up to snuff, too many just standing around playing on their phones..
