Is there a heterosexual man alive who doesnt think this is a collosal waste of resources? Why not just give her cash instead? Wouldnt that be more practical and result in less suffering? not only suffering for the two of you (having less cash at the exact moment you need lots of it, wedding, house, etc) but war crimes (rape, murder, etc).

Is there any defense to this? Why does this tradition even exist? Actually the reason it exists is because DeBeers created it, but why does it STILL exist?

And there is no indication of any care whatsoever on the part of the woman about the effort it takes to save that kind of money (3 months salary) or what use it could be best put to. Its a shocking display of selfishness, and its how we start our most important relationship.

And women who say, "If you loved her, you would..". I would sacrifice all that cash, which, if you have it saved, is a security fund in case a disaster happens, or if you dont have it, is a burden put on the two of you as you start your life together. A new study shows that a brisk walk may be able to do the trick just as well.

In the American Heart Association journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, a research study has been reported which has found that “walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes as much as running can.” Researchers looked at 33,060 runners and 15,045 walkers and compared their heart health over the course of six years.

Walking and running work same muscle groups

Paul T. Williams, Ph.D., the principle author of the study, reported, “Walking and running provide an ideal test of the health benefits of moderate-intensity walking and vigorous-intensity running because they involve the same muscle groups and the same activities performed at different intensities.” He and his co-author looked at distance run or walked, rather than time spent doing each activity.

Unsurprisingly, they found that the longer a person ran or walked, the more they benefited. Runners experienced a 4.2 percent reduced risk for first-time hypertension, while walkers’ risk was reduced 7.2 percent. Runners also had a 12.1 percent reduced risk of first-time diabetes, compared to a 12.3 percent decrease for walkers.

Walking is more sustainable

Williams also pointed out that “walking may be a more sustainable activity for some people when compared to running, however, those who choose running end up exercising twice as much as those that choose walking.” Some people may choose not to exercise at all, thinking walking doesn’t benefit them enough to be worth the effort. These findings may be the incentive people need to give up on finding excuses not to exercise.
