Exhibition Explores Chance & Structure Through Mixed Media

Seeds Gallery features mixed media drawings by Kelly Kozma, paintings by Paulo Machado, and photography by John Singletary. On view in June and July, this exhibition features three diverse artists who utilize their media to investigate visual texture, chance processes, the structure of organic forms, and the chemistry of photography. Please join us Saturday, June 8, from 5pm to 8pm, to celebrate the opening of this exhibit. Additional open hours include June 22, July 13, and July 27 (5-8pm). Seeds Gallery is located at 5011 Baltimore Avenue in Cedar Park, West Philadelphia. For more information, visit Seeds Gallery – 5011 Baltimore Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19143 — 267.289.2705.

Kelly Kozma uses chance processes to construct images in paint, pencil, and hand sewing, creating brightly colored, rhythmically patterned imagery of abstracted worlds. With each meticulous hand stitch, a flat sheet of paper transforms into a textile-based piece. With each chance decision, the relationship between the artist’s hand and a surrender of control hangs in balance.

Paulo Machado’s large format paintings explore themes of the natural environment versus the built world through vibrant colors and abstract patterns. Repetition, the grid, and a dialogue between organic and geometric shapes immerse the viewer in Machado’s visual investigations of social, cultural, and environmental issues.

John Singletary’s work uses a large format to capture the intricate reactions that occur as chemical mixtures, which include standard photographic darkroom compounds, dry – presenting large gestural forms that contain a landscape of fine textures and repeating structures that suggest both the microscopic and the cosmic.

Seeds Gallery is a modern art studio focused on local artists and dedicated to promoting local art. The gallery represents emerging and established career artists in all media and styles. Exhibits are showcased at the gallery and staged at other locations throughout the city. Our partners include local restaurants, coffee shops, yoga studios, law firms and book stores.

Hello everyone. I just wanted to post word of my new book- The Philadelphia State Hospital at Byberry: A History of Misery and Medicine. For anyone interested in Byberry, this is the first comprehensive 100-year history of the hospital. In researching the place, I was treated to one of the most interesting socio-political horror stories that I've ever witnessed. For Philadelphians who've ever wondered about the complicated history of one of America's worst public hospitals, this is a very interesting read. It contains 75 images (mostly historical) of the hospital during its time as a city, and state run facility. The images are from Temple University Urban Archives, the City Archives, the State Archives in Harrisburg, the Historical Society, and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, as well as a few from my personal collection of ephemera and some of my own photos from the later years. It is available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, and other retailers. I have 35 copies left (out of 125). They're available from my website: The Story of Byberry.
Publisher: History Press, 176 pgs.
