"James Bradford is... Thick!" is a raucous, hilarious musical journey through the life of singer/comedian James Bradford. Told in a series of monologues and live rock performances with his band The Mana-Manas, James takes his audience on a wild trip with some unexpected, uniquely interpreted cover tunes sprinkled between stories about prostitution, growing up queer in the American south and the perils of starring on reality TV.
James Bradford was born in St. Louis, MO to a schizophrenic woman who gave him up for adoption. Rasied in, to quote him, "the most white-bread human bakery you could imagine" the family moved to Shreveport, Louisiana when he was six years old. Plunked in the middle of a very conservative Christian town he grew up "cluelessly gay" in an unaccepting community. Dropping out of high school at age sixteen to attend acting school in New York City coincided with the diagnoses of his adoptive mother's cancer. As he struggled to consolodate coming of age with her death a year later, he began a downward spiral of comically bad decisions. Thus began a ten year trip through a world of sex and escorting (via craigslist,) DJing in New Orleans, kicking through improv troupes and musical theater productions all while desperately trying to hold onto his sanity.
Finding humor in every dark corner of his life, James offers up these stories while relating them with biting wit to popular culture and the world of fame and celebrity that he so bittery brushed elbows with (but never achieved.) From Debbie Gibson to
RuPaul, no one goes unscathed. "Thick" is an in-your-face laugh riot story of how one
man went from a picked-on teenage flamer, to a confident and assertive manic-depressive ex-hooker has-been diva!
