    Default Mummers 2014

Well, it is that time of year again. My annual Mummers thread. Let us go over the rules again, shall we?

This is not a thread to bash the parade or make bad remarks about it. Feel free to make a MUMMERS SUCK! thread of your own.

Next, while I encourage members of the Comics, Fancies and Brigades to post information in here, this thread deals mostly with how to view the parade in as much as everyone pretty much just wants to watch the string bands.

On a personal note, after marching with Avalon in 13 parades, I will march up with Pennsport this year. No animosity towards my old club. I wish them the best.

Here is the Order of March for the 2014 parade. Last year's finish is in parenthesis.

    1. Woodland (3)
    2. Fralinger (1)
    3. Polish American (9)
    4. Avalon (Tied 6)
    5. Ferko (5)
    6. Uptown (10)
    7. Trilby (17)
    8. South Philadelphia (4)
    9. Greater Overbrook (16)
    10. Aqua (8)
    11. Hegeman (Tied 6)
    12. Quaker City (2)
    13. Pennsport (11)
    14. Broomall (13)
    15. Durning (14)
    16. Greater Kensington (15)
    17. Duffy (12)

As you can see, the last two champions go up 1st and 2nd, which should make it interesting.

As a refresher, here are the top 3 bands from last year:

    3rd place, Woodland:

Woodland String Band Mummers 2013 - YouTube

    2nd place, Quaker City:

Quaker City String Band Mummers 2013 - YouTube

    1st place, Fralinger:

Fralinger String Band Mummers 2013 - YouTube

I have seen every string band performance since the 70's---and what Fralinger did last year is the best of all time.

I hope to have more information earlier this year. I will be home on December 26th. Salsamania anyone?

Any questions, fell free to post them or IM me.

I watched the Fralinger video and I have to agree with you. The costumes and the makeup were amazing.

This is heresy, I know, but I wish the parade would start with a top-notch string band instead of the endless parade of...less well drilled comics. As someone who marches, Chief, does anyone feel the same way?

The old saying is that having the good bands go up first is like eating your steak before your salad.

With 5 really good bands going up 1st to 5th, it will make for interesting scoring for the judges. Quaker City is an easy bet to win already---but now that they are going up 12th, with little resistance around them, many think it is their parade to lose.

The flip side is, with so many good bands at the front of the order, the judges will not hold back points as they traditionally are believed to do.

Ferko did that. And they shouldn't have.

That Fralinger's Performance is great. Does anyone know what song the band starts playing at 1:00 minute in the video? It sounds so familiar...

I will post every now and then my favorite string band performances.

In 1990, two small bands merged and gave us one of the funniest, most Mummy performances ever:

    Today's Mum Moment

The last time Quaker City took lower than 3rd was in 1997 with this:

Looking at this video really makes me wish that the back pieces didn’t slowly shrink and disappear over the years like the evolution of a prehistoric animal. The way they amplified the movement of the performers was really part of the visual stimulation. It’s really evident when you compare this video to those of the winners from last year.

So, as you see, the order of march might either be a slam dunk for a Quaker City win, or could make the first 5 bands all possible winners.

The last time a band won going up before 10th was Hegeman in 1995.

Today's Mum Moment goes back to 1989. Ferko did a "Best of Mummy" theme called At the Strutter's Ball. It was a fun theme.
