    Default Hip-Hop Shows/Events?

Recently moved to philly and curious about the hip-hop scene. I went to the b-boy bbq in West Philly in July and it was pretty sweet. Looking for more things like that or how to find hip-hop shows etc. When I say hip-hop I do not mean Lil Wayne or 50 Cent, nothing you hear on the radio. I am talking about real music, well as far as philly goes artists like Freeway, Jedi Mind Tricks and The Roots obviously. But I like old school hip-hop as well. Thanks!

What exactly is "old school hip hop"?
Is that like Martha & the Vandellas?

    LOL

More like Grand Master Flash. Hip hop didn't really start until the 70's.

    hi tolte!

Fluid Nightclub has some great nights... and they had Questlove from the Roots djing every saturday until very recently! Great lowkey hiphop nights. They are near 4th and south and they have a decent website. Silk City also has some great old school hip hop nights.

Hehe, funny! Yes, more like Grand Master Flash, Grand Master Caz, Run DMC, Whodini etc. I could go on. My love for hip-hop is pretty vast. Thanks for the recommendations loveisnoise...Will have to check those places out. Fluid seems pretty sweet.

You might also like this trailer for a documentary on some of it's roots.

I believe old school hip hop originated around 1977. Martha and the Vandellas was an early 1960s girl group among others like the Crystals.

    Lemmie, I was being silly.

I know what old school stuff is.... I was an independant DJ for extra money on the side during the 70's, early 80's.
Ya know, when they used real records.
And one of my records was a 12" single of The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight.
Of course it seq'd perfectly into Chic's "Good Times".

Jedi Mind Tricks just played a show at Union Transfer. Shows there are booked by R5 Productions. They don't do too many hip-hop shows, but they are worth getting familiar with in general. I also highly recommend attending The Philly Gathering at The Rotunda. It's the last Thursday of every month. It used to be a whole lot better, but it's still a great celebration of hip-hop culture.
