Default Please help local 501(c)3 nonprofit BAN horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia!

Peace Advocacy Network (PAN), a 501(c)3 based in Philadelphia, is renewing calls for a ban on horse-drawn carriages in Philadelphia after the most recent carriage accident! In just over 48 hours, they have over 600 signatures, or more than half of their goal of 1,000 on their Change.org petition!

PAN already has draft legislation ready to go, to ban the carriages, but needs our district one representative, Mark Squilla, to sponsor it. They've had the draft legislation for a few years now and have been protesting on a regular basis, but it never went anywhere because the previous district rep was totally opposed to a ban on carriages. I'm unsure of Mr. Squilla's position, but I know he is liberal and think he might be sympathetic.

In light of the most recent carriage accident, PAN is taking this opportunity to renew a call for the ban. This includes myself, as a constituent of the district, attempting to get a meeting to discuss the ban with Mr. Squilla and hopefully, getting him to sponsor it! I will go armed with a stack of letters from district business owners and the Change.org petition to prove there are plenty of people voicing their support of the ban.

This is where you come in. There are already more than 500 signatures there, but if I'm going to get a meeting, I was hoping to go in with at least 1,000. I'm going to try to schedule a meeting within the next couple of days, so I don't have a lot of time to hit that goal. With all the signatures I got in two days, though, I know it can be done!

PLEASE sign and post this petition far and wide through Facebook, Twitter, etc. Be sure to explain WHY this is so important and how it might actually have a real effect on getting a ban on the carriage in Philadelphia and it's not just another online petition that doesn't really do anything in the real world.

Also, there will be a protest THIS SUNDAY from 12-2 on E. 6th St. between Chestnut and Market. Please come out and show your support! If you have any questions about the protest, you can email brandon@peaceadvocacynetwork.org. You're welcome to hand out literature, or just stand and hold a sign, if that's all you're comfortable with. Even if you can't start the whole time, come for as long as you can!

Here is some information from PAN about why the ban is necessary. Please help in any way you can!

ABOUT PEACE ADVOCACY NETWORK: Peace Advocacy Network (PAN) is a grassroots group completely run by volunteers. PAN strives for the absence of violence in the lives of people and animals. Campaigns include vegan advocacy, humane facts education, horse-drawn carriage ban, LGBTQ issues, and human rights issues.

Yeah no. I've got no problem with animals being used for work.

As for obstructing traffic, I drive through Old City/Independence Mall area every day and I've only ever been slowed down by them maybe two or three times, and for a grand total of 30 seconds. Not going to take away an industries right to operate over something like that.

As an aside, I've always always wanted to try eating horse, I bet it's tasty. There's got to be a reason they eat horse in so many different parts of the world.

The problem here is that making them work toughens the meat.

They add character to Old City. Your Peace Advocacy Network should work to control puking, screaming Jersey-Shore-cast wannabes.

I had horse in Japan. It was very rare and fantastic.

I had no idea it was horse until I was about 1/2 way through the plate. The nonchalance of my dining companions when they explained what I was eating was hilarious.

When we have guests from out-of-town, they really enjoy the carriage rides. I see no point in banning them, and would be sorry to see them go.

What does eliminating a historic and carbon neutral tourist transportation have to do with "Peace Advocacy", in a Network or otherwise.

How about "Naive, Out OF Touch People Who Don't Understand the Word Domesticated" or NOOTPWDUWD?

Nothing wrong with horse drawn carriages as long as the animals are treated with reasonable care.

Can we replace the horse drawn carriages with dog sled teams?

Given the number of canines in the shelters it seems like a win!

If you're going to replace them, replace them with mules. Mules handle the heat better, so they wouldn't have to be sent back to the stables in hot weather like the horses are today.

Wow I'm now totally convinced that after the apocolypse, we'll all be getting around dystopic future Philadelphia pulled by teams of pitbulls.

And may be ordering this. And maybe some dog booties.

Oh man dog sled tours would be so awesome!

I hear they still eat dog in Korea and China too. Sweet deal.

Too bad about the tough meat though. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Reminds me of a terrible joke about (insert country where people eat dog).

A guy is visting a rural village in (insert country here) and see's a 3 legged dog run by and sees it stopping at each house. At each house, someone comes out and lavishes pets and gives the dog a small treat. He asks his host "Whats the deal on that dog?"
"Oh thats the dog that faught off the wolves that were attacking our goats and saved the young girl that was tending the flock. And he barked and warned us when the old earthen dam was about to break and flood the village. That dog is a hero and most honored in the village."
"So he was injured fighting off the wolves?"
"No, a dog that special you don't eat all at once."

Usually its best told stretching out the heroic things the dog did 3 or 4 times for set up.

Anyhoo, I would never eat my dog but I am very intrigued by urban dog scootering.
