You hit the nail on the head here. The second we suggest private investment in public space, there's an outcry from the public workers who aren't doing their jobs. You know how easy it would be to find 20 some odd volunteers to plant and maintain a garden in City Hall or the Broad Street median? But no, you'd have a unionized revolt on your hands from the ones already profiting off what isn't there.

Its of my belief that the subway is outmoded and should be mothballed. In the year 2012 the thoughts of people having to commute underground is quite bizarre. Its dirty, its dangerous and its unnecessary.

Light rail in the middle of Broad Street makes more sense than subways underneath Broad Street.

    Seriously dude?
It would messup traffic something fierce. It would also be incredibly slow. Imagine travelling from fern rock to temple or city hall or worse the stadium along surface routes.

Light Rail is old fashioned, BRT is the way of the future.

I'm going to guess that you're still drunk from last night.

Montreal, Paris, London, Lisbon, Chicago, and even Los Angeles have subways - I've ridden in all of those, and more. There's nothing at all obsolete about subways. They do tend to be more useful for getting around cities when they don't just go in straight lines, and that is where ours suffers. They're incredibly efficient at moving large numbers of people around densely populated urban centers, much more efficient than highways are at moving people around suburban areas. I'd like to see our Center City loop subway line completed or at least unified and extended.

Light rail? If you're going up, why stop there?? We need a monorail!

Why would we put light rail on top of an existing subway? Light rails are fine and all but there are a solution for cities like Portland built for the car with no underground transportation infrastructure built before everyone had two cars. We're lucky to have a subway. We'd never be able to build one today, most cities wouldn't, which is why everyone talks about light rails.

it's one of the dumbest posts I've ever read. I've heard people say that two fo the four tracks should be converted to light rail for branch lines to the northeast, germantown, etc but never building new light rail and abandoning the tunnel. it's interesting he didn't pick a photo of montreal's underground walkways.

So today I found myself riding up Broad Street from the stadiums to City Hall.

Wasnt the greatest of days, hot, muggy, dim overcast, and not surprisingly not much foot traffic. So while Im in town I'm trying to feel the vibe of what is South Broad Street.

The stadium area. Im seeing names like Wells Fargo,XFINITY,Citizens Bank,Comcast,Lincoln Financial. This area should be immaculate and look like Beverly Hills but its incredibly shabby. You get off at the Broad Street exit and there is graffiti on the overpasses, weed stalks, trash and a general unkeptness. With the money that those stadiums bring in FDR Park and deep south Broad Street should look 100% better than it does.

As you make your way up Broad ST. Marconi Plaza appears to need a couple hundred thousand dollars of upgrading. Its in sad shape. Keep rolling towards City Hall and the entire 2-3 mile stretch there are giant weed stalks growing on the median and sidewalks and vacant lots. The trash is 2 feet high pinned along the fenced lots at Broad + Washington. The weeds inside the fence are 6 feet high. If someone blindfolded you and dropped you off at Broad + Washington you might think you are in the middle of Chester or Juarez not 1/2 mile from the Corporate presence and upward mobility of Center City.

I cant get over how the city council person for that area or the Mayor think its OK for Broad Street to look like this. Get it together people.

The mayor and city council LOVE weeds. I wouldn't be Surprised if someone in council proposed a bill to make a weed the official city 'flower'.

At the risk of sounding like I agree with Bleeper, what about his last post was hyperbolic?

I don't know about Beverly Hills...but this area is the front door to the city for about 8million annual visitors. So maybe it shouldn't look like this (from this past friday night):

    Last paved: 1963

Are these trees alive, or are they future props in a Tim Burton film?

It just screams: shabby. How about spending a $million--plants some new trees, add some BRICK pavers?
