Default Furniture donation pickup in Center City?

Are there any charities/companies (Salvation Army? Goodwill? others? Uhuru Furniture?!) that do free pickup of furniture at people's homes for any furniture (may also be clothing) that is being donated? I have donated furniture in the past when I moved to Philly and didn't want to move it all with me, but that was in Texas. I may have a mattress, a bed, and miscellany...

Who can I call? Do they do this only on weekdays or also weekends?

    Thanks for any help/input!

I've donated lots of stuff, including furniture, to Philly Aids Thrift. They don't pick up. Pretty sure Uhuru does, but I highly recommend NOT donating to that awful group. If you have a truck or access to one, send to Salvation Army; Goodwill or PAT.

The Salvation Army says this on its website: Call 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825) to discuss a free pick up of your clothing, furniture or household items or to find out the nearest drop off location bin.

FYI - very few charities these days will take used mattresses. Hygiene/bedbug concerns, I think.

The Salvation Army is ridiculously picky about the furniture they will accept. Several years ago, I wanted to donate a couch. There were a few very small (and I mean very small) rips on the arms. They easily could have been covered up. They refused it because it would have been too depressing for anyone to have. Personally, I think no furniture is more depressing. I had used it that way for a couple of years and it never depressed me.

    what's PAT?

In Dallas, I gave away a whole living room set and Salvation Army (or was it Goodwill? I don't remember now...but one wouldn't come and pick it up and other would, so I went with the one that came to my apt) took care of it... couch, coffee table, two side tables, couple of floor lamps, and other stuff... they gave a pickup time and they came around that time, and I didn't have to lift a finger...just had to have stuff ready for them.

I don't know how things work here... and I'm renting in a condo building that requires elevator reservation time for deliveries/pickups...I would rather someone come and pickup the stuff. I don't own a truck or know a good friend who has one and will let me borrow it...

What do I do with my old mattress if nobody picks it up? I guess I'll have to figure out with my building's trash management...that'd be a shame to just dump it, because it's not in terrible shape, I just want a new one.

    Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

just found out Vietnam Veterans of America does donation pickups too, but I need to figure out more details. My ideal charity to give would be secular, non-denominational, non-discriminatory.

You might be able to find a taker for a mattress through a posting in your building, or through Freecycle (phillyfreecycle : phillyfreecycle). There might also be places around here that recycle them. And bed-sellers will often take away your old bedding when they deliver you new bedding.

Thanks-- I've not bought bedding in a while, so all this is really helpful!

Purple Heart! 215.838.1020 or www.PurpleHeartPickup.org. I just got a postcard that said they will pick up in my neighborhood (Fairmount) on June 25. They've taken everything I've ever tried to donate.

LOL. I love your post. I hope they didn't really use the word depressing. I also agree that not having any furniture is the real problem. I have a great brown leather couch, but my big cat sliced it in one spot on an arm. I still love it, and my cat.

This sounds bad, but if all else fails, leave your stuff on a curb in the middle of the night. Inevitably, people will adopt your old stuff and take it home, even if it takes a few days.
