Default Can we retire the term 'gayborhood' ?

Enough already. The neighborhood isn't really all that gay anymore. Gay people live all over the place, the days of them only feeling welcome in one area are long gone. Are a couple of gay bars really enough to declare an entire section in the middle of center city the gayborhood?

Yeah, I get tired of hearing the term Center City too, it's not even located in the geographic center of the city.

Why don't we retire the Italian Market while we're at it? Not many Italians around there. And Fishtown - don't see too much fishing commercial or otherwise around these days, either.

I think there's more than just a couple bars last I checked... Tavern on Camac, Knock, Westbury, Woody's, Icandy, Voyeur, Bike Stop, Uncles, Sisters, Tabu, Q Lounge. Not counting the related establishments or gay owned businesses like Mazzoni Center, Sansom St Gym, William Way Center, 12th Street Gym, Sansom St Cinema, Club Body Center, Barbuzzi, Danny's, Equality PA, GALAEI, Halloween, Matthew Izzo, Metropolitan Community Church, and some possible others I'm forgetting. Just because some yuppies started a daycare in the area and the housing is no longer affordable doesn't mean it still doesn't have a large amount of gay owned/related businesses.

I'm proud to live in a city that openly has a gayborhood.

If you think having a little section of town designated for the gays is progressive then you are way off.

You think San Francisco has a 'gayborhood'?

No! they are just normal people there, as they should be.

So, what are you going to rename Germantown?

When I was a young gay man, Spruce Street -west- of Broad was the "gayborhood" I think the term is as silly and offensive as can be but it probably appeals to the young crowd.

San Fran has it's "Castro" district.
Well-known as the "center" of gaydom.

I love the name Gayborhood, it is the most hilarious name for a predominantly gay hood in the country. Though I must admit it isn't as gay as it once was.

Don't the rainbow flag/banners designate the area that is the gayborhood? I kinda like when people call it mid town village.

Who decided they would be a good idea? That is, if some local civic association devised the plan and executed it, doesn't that mean they are happy to be known as "the gayborhood?" And if that's the case, who are we to say retire that name?

Ah, midtown village..speaking of forced and not needed.

Gayborhood is now near historical, so it won't be going away....

My uncle moved away from Philly in the '70s. He was back visiting recently and when he saw the banners he said, "Frank Rizzo must be turning over in his grave."

Which is funny, as Frank Rizzo was one of the biggest supporters of the Gayborhood.

    EXACTLY.

First, I think the OP is a troll. If not? Merely a moron and I apologize.

These arguments are like white churchgoers getting upset over rap lyrics when urban blacks have no problem with them-oops, I said "black". I better say African American just to appease the white folks on this board.

Every city in the world has a gayborhood. They call it their version of the gayborhood in their own way. Whooptiding.

It will always be the gayborhood and should be. If you think it is 'less gay', just go for pizza at 3am and beg for a booty bump. You'll probably get a free slice and a burning a-hole, and be up for days.

Maybe we should just name the neighborhood after this gay bar I saw in Paris-then we can be all european for smug yuppies everywhere! After all, it's french!
