    Default Pafa

Any opinions on the 'sculpture' of the paint and brush in front of PAFA on Broad St?

there is a whole long thread about this somewhere on the boards, from when it was proposed up to it's unveiling (the thread is actually about the whole project, street and sculpture)... BUT ... I actually walked by it finally yesterday and think it's pretty hideous, I had to explain what it was from a distance, I think the brush part should have been a bit more detailed, with bristles or something, instead of just one big reddish thing on top.

Well, I try my darndest to be a supporter of all things new in the city. And I try tirelessly to be a supporter, and an appreciater, of art. But this thing just took my breath - and not in a good way. Hoo boy.

OMG I'm surprised PAFA would purchase such a grotesque 'sculpture' when they're such a great school!

I'm really kind of undecided. I love the concept of the sculpture, but feel the execution is a little too... Disney for my taste.

Of course, I can't read reactions to this installaton without thinking of how widely Oldenburg's clothespin was hated, initially, and how we mostly seem to have grown used to it, at the very least.

Part of my personal process for deciding how to receiveit has been to invite people to share their photos of it in a Flickr group: Flickr: Paint Torch

    My main criticism.

    It looks cheap.

The design is there, the scale and sense of gravity in relationship to the space all work but it looks like a comp.

An a that's all I've got to say bout that!

Thanks! That's a very clear description of the problem. That's pretty much what I meant when I called it, "too Disney." I was thinking it looked like a cartoon of itself, but calling it a comp is even more accurate.

This isn't the only Oldenberg with that problem lately, though. oldenburg - Google Search
