Default Tomorrow, SCRUB to have an tantrum....

..Because we already know they HATE advertising push on them in public, no matter how much money it brings the city...

Planners: Gallery as 'Times Sq'; PCC hotel; billboards; parks | PhillyDeals | 11/12/2010

[T]o allow bright flashing signs that would make the neighborhood around investor Ron Rubin/Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust's Gallery shopping mall, Market St East from 7th to 13th, look 'almost like Times Square' in New York, says commission director Gary Jastrzab. The proposal, by city councilmen Frank DiCicco and Jim Kenney, is supposed to make the area more attractive to shoppers at night, and raise cash that would be earmarked for 'building improvements.'"

Nah, I don't see them stopping this, especially since, per the above, it would "raise cash that would be earmarked for 'building improvements.'" SCRUB will definitely express their displeasure, but I'm going to guess that by now, it's become white noise to Council.

Default More ads, more signs, more lights, more life

Market Street east of City Hall can use anything and everything that isn't a bum, a con artist or a creepy crawly.

Make Market East look like this: http://www.popularwallpapers.org/ima...yo-776437.jpeg

    That's all. Thank you.

If they can wrap warehouses on Del Ave they should be able to wrap Market with better signs.

The fact that SCRUB forced them to remove that absolute Ad on the side of the building at 8th and Market was a real sign to me that SCRUB was stupid and misdirected.

a during that same time I saw about 5 huge obnoxious HD Lit up Billboards along 95 go up
I'm not seeing all these supposed bikes in all these million dollar bike lanes.

Killing hundreds of thousands of dollars for SEPTA by fighting the Dunkin Donuts wrap sucked.

Taking more money from SEPTA fighting the Redbull ad on a MFL elevator sucked.

It makes it harder to accept when the stuff they fight against would actually help our tax burdens.

Yeah, and if SEPTA can raise money by blaring rap music from speakers on top of their buses, that would be good too, right ? ... DO any of you people actually live in center city, or do you all just work for Stait billboards, or what? If you don't care for the architecture of buildings and need to have them wrapped in crappy commercial graphics, why do you live here? Perhaps you should move to Admiral Wilson Boulevard.

Yes, I live in Center City. Further, I have no problems whatsoever with Market Street buildings, such as The Gallery, having wraps or neon. Look at areas in London, and hell nearly all of Tokyo, have bright lights and great signs. What is wrong with it? I think more blocks of Market Street should have, nay NEED lights and signs!

Yeah dude, I do. Who would want the beautiful pastures of market east to resemble the bustling, thriving strips of real estate like picadily circus...times square...or dundas square. We need to preserve the beautiful exteriors of the blank white gallery at all costs! Travel outside of Philly a bit and see what an economic engine districts like this really are.

    Anyways, any news on this?

    Hilarious !

For a bunch of people who don't trust city council and want them out of office you seem to give them credit for some real assinine ideas. Do you ooh and ah at fireworks too ? You expect that a bunch of flashing signs and LED boards are going to bring better businesses to Market street ? Here's a low-brow axiom you should learn. YOU CAN"T POLISH A TURD. Getting people to look up will make everyone forget what it looks like when they look back down. This will have zero positive effect on the area and the only thing to save Market East is a wrecking ball.

I am all for advertisement if it is interesting and enhances the environment somehow. We all advertise ourselves in one way or another if we want to make money (whether its on an application form or the side of a building).

Unfortunately most advertisement is dreadfully boorish.

TS and Tokyo 's are rare instances. Maybe it's possible Market street could become a place of interest because of out-of-control advertising, but I doubt it. It would most likely be painful.

I would even be willing to accept an attempt if it were just ME, but that would open the flood gates for more crap on !-95, hotels on Independence Mall, etc.

    So... No.

    ps
if you look at the geography of TS, it lends itself to that sort of thing way more the ME, which is just one side of a street.

I live in Center City and don't see this as a slippery slope - Market Street is a street unlike any other in Philly just as Time Square is in NYC. There will not be flashing lights in the neighborhoods.

I also think that Market East can be improved by building on the empty lots (disney hole) first and by building on top of the existing structure/modifying what is there - that is it doesn't need the wrecking ball; however if someone (not the city) came in with money to start fresh more power to them.

While I'm for the lights/ads - I think a smart thing to do would be to take some of the revenue and put it back into Market Street, to keep it safe and possibly look for ways to improve it. As we all know Market East is similar to the 1980's Times Square in that it doesn't get a lot of love. It's important that the result of this proposal doesn't make Market East more similar to the 1980's TS than the current form in terms of being dirty and violent (granted 1980's TS had the peep shows, hookers etc).

What we will get is a half-assed idea and even worse execution. Granted the city will claim it's using it's whole ass.

    Excuse me.

I lived 1 block from City Hall, at 13th and Chestnut, for YEARS.

That also puts me closer to 1234 Market than any of you people, and I also lived 1 block from 1234 Market when the Dunkin Ad went up. I was rather pleased at how they did the wrap and was hoping that the sh_t abandoned commercial properties along the south side of Market between 12th and 6th would eventually get this edifice treatment. I mean how many empty 2-4th floor storefronts do we need to see on Market Street?
