So does that now mean that ABO Haven will take over a lease directly with the state?
How did they still use the building when they haven't paid in several years? The state just never collected the keys? And if there were no leases or utilities to pay, where was all the sublease money going to?
Berean boards members are typically politically connected people and elected officials. That explains the way of not paying.
Yes, two officers were recently ordered to turn in their badges with "intent to dismiss" because of several shady dealings, including running a business at 19th and Girard Avenue that had illegal hookups. A few days earlier, Philly.com ran a story about the troubles at the Berean Institute, and in that article PGW and PECO both disavowed having any knowledge of service to that building. So, when I saw the story about the two police officers, I assumed their illegally hooked up property at 19th and Girard was probably the Berean Institute building. I'm sure it is...a little digging can probably confirm that.
The point of all this, this is another glaring example of the EXTREME CORRUPTION & SLEAZE that pervades EVERY layer in this City. I don't know what has brought us to this point? Unions, entrenched 2-party system, the ward system, huge lower/working class population, spineless politicians????? I suspect all of these play a part in why this City is so parochial, corrupt, insular, non-progressive, reactive, etc. And sadly there is no easy solution. Politicians - who can pass corrective/progressive legislation - are reflective of the people they represent, and people generally vote for politicians who think/act like them or who will "take care of them", so I don't really hold out any hope that this kind of corruption and sleaze will be rooted out any time soon, if at all.
