Most people do shop in that manner. Most people who can, go to a supermarket. They get their shopping done pretty much at one place, unless they want special items from say, TJ's or Reading Terminal or a bakery. There's nothing "suburban style" about that. Isn't that why people have been trying to get a supermarket built up there for a decade?

For people who don't have access to a car this is another piece of the puzzle.

Yes. They plan to have the store open by Thanksgiving.

That's good to hear. While BD isn't my kind of store, lots of people like them. It'll be a great addition to the neighborhood.

I've never understood that. Yeah, it's convenient to go to one place but in return you're seriously taken advantage of in terms of prices.

If that's happening to you, you're shopping in the wrong stores. And Adam's right, your time (and gas) should be taken into account.

No, I shop at Aldi for staples, the food truck/co-op for fruits and veggies and a couple different places periodically for the few items that are left. It's not rocket science to time it right so it doesn't take much more time or gas than driving out to one of the big supermarkets.

I would guess that for most people, making trips to 4 or 5 diff locations to get their groceries would be a time waster if they had quick access to a major supermarket.

Two. I shop at two places weekly. Once every few months I go to Trader Joe's to get raisins and feta and the Rice and Spice to get a 2L bottle of olive oil that is actually olive oil.

The thing to keep in mind is, many full service supermarkets are located in a shopping center with many other stores. Supermarkets don't make huge profit lines. A lot of times they rely on the rents from the other tenants with the supermarket as the "draw" and anchor. What happens is, a lot of people bundle errands and they do all their food shopping at one store, then maybe the bank, pharmacy (if not in the store), hardware store, pet store, etc.

That's really where the kicker typically is. Large supermarkets are typically surrounded by other stores as well. So for a lot like in Brewerytown, an undersized store with few additional rents is a very niche market.

Either way, people adapt and adopt the lifestyles most convenient.

I probably undervalue my time, but I also try to work one of my stops into my other routines to economize a bit.

Since I work and still care for a former roommate in Center City, I usually get my shopping for produce and some cheeses done at the RTM on the way from Saturday caregiving. Then I usually hit either two or three supermarkets near me - Bell's Market being the one constant - and play their specials off one another. That means I probably wreck their profit margins, but I save money, and the stores are located in such a way that I can trip-chain without going out of my way.

And how much do you think you save, weekly, by doing that?

A lot over the course of the year. It adds up.

The time/money value goes the other way too, you know. If doing shopping at more than one place takes a few extra minutes, but it can saves you $ that you otherwise would have had to work hour(s) to earn.

I don't think you're saving what you think you are. In time or money. But to each his own.

I know that I've worked the numbers for me and what little I save by going to a second store, even when it's very close to the 1st store, isn't worth the time it takes. And I mean all the time: looking at two circulars, comparing prices, creating two lists, commute time, shopping time, checkout time, etc. For me the reduction in hassle by going to one store, and the time savings, is worth paying what amounts to a tiny premium for.

I, too, have done the calculations and know that I am saving enough to make it worth the effort. The second store is a food truck so there are no circulars, second shopping lists or even shopping really to deal with and it's on the way back from the Aldi.

It's great that this area now has a Bottom Dollar for nerds to argue over. Congrats!

When I take my dog to get groomed . I stop in at food basic the food is almost half the price . I get my lox 16oz size for $12 it is $19 everywhere else . That is just one example.
Anyway i thought they were breaking ground yesterday ?
