Smile Collecting Back-To-School Supplies. Please Be Generous!

Starting Wednesday, August 3, 2011, Best In Show Grooming Salon - 2708 West Girard Avenue - will accept any school supplies you can donate.

If you donate school supplies, and you are a customer of ours, your dog will receive a FREE Blueberry/Vanilla Facial Scrub (an $8 value) while being groomed.

However, you do NOT need to be a grooming customer, or even own a pet, to drop off school supplies.

This drive is through August 15th, at which point the West Girard Community Council will collect the supplies, then drop them off at the 22nd Police District to be combined with their supply drive.

For more information about this offer, call Best In Show Grooming Salon at 267 514-7991, or reach out to Bob Seabury at 215-232-2728 or email Bob at WGCC at BooksBob@aol.com

All donations received will be distributed through the annual Back to School program organized by the 22nd Police District in cooperation with the Alston Beech Foundation.

Really? Why even bother? Do you really believe these kids will even use them?

In Philadelphia, 70 percent of the public elementary schools do not have libraries. If there are no books, children will not read. If students do not have pencils, they will not write-it is a simple concept of why Philadelphia has the need for the community to donate to the children.

This may be a little premature, but it's the best way I know to kick off a dreary Thursday morning:

The 22nd District Back to School event is a huge affair that draws hundreds of kids and their families. It's a very worthwhile event.

Ouch! Wow, that's a really negative response to very basic, low-cost charity drive. No money is being requested...just drop off some pencils, paper, erasers, child-friendly scissors, calculator, knapsacks...whatever you think a child would need to be prepared to go back to school. There are several dollar stores on Girard Avenue where you can purchase this material cheaply. Or, if you're feeling more generous, go to Target or Wal-Mart and buy the name brand stuff...still, probably pretty cheap.

As a small business owner, I would prefer to dig lightly into my pockets and provide some supplies to local students, instead of having my outrageously high taxes raised even further in order to provide these materials.

And, in this crappy economy, every bit - from the private sector - helps.

So, can we count on you?

Sorry, but no you cannot . If the supplies are so cheap on Girard Ave, let their parent(s) buy them. But, I will donate $50 to the ASPCA instead.

Oh well, I tried, but that's the beauty of a free society.. to each his/her own. HOWEVER, as an animal lover and supporter of the ASPCA (among other animal orgs), I do applaud your donation to them.

Thanks for starting this thread - great idea. I'll try to make it over with some supplies. (I teach in a private school, and I know how good we have it)
