Default "New" Corner "Shop" at 30th & Girard

The empty soul food joint at the NE corner of 30th and Girard has been quite the center of activity over the past few nights. While there didn't seem to be any exterior changes (or notice) someone has been operating a little corner shop out of it. I use the term "shop" loosely, as I don't know that L&I has approved them to simply wheel a cooler up to the (blocked) front door and sell popsicles out of it. Do we know who has undertaken such an enterprise? Is it a non-profit? Guerrilla retail? Start-up?

I haven't been over there yet, but if that cooler has Choco-Tacos, would you all be satisfied that Mexican food had come to the area?

It has outdoor seating on the sidewalk, so maybe Steven Starr is involved.

Giant banner sign says "Brewerytown Eatery." I hadn't noticed it until today. Any details on this?

I hope it isn't just a guy selling soda out of a cooler in the doorway again.

Right. Have you seen any work going on inside that would lead you to believe it will be anything more than that this summer?

    Default Brewerytown Restaurant

As late as 3am this morning there were over a dozen people hanging at in and around this joint. So, West Girard is now a 24-hour neighborhood, just like Manhattan. Yay!

Did they have a Grand Opening or other special event, or are we to expect this to be a late night joint from now on? Also hearing that the new salon across the street (former "law" office) is to be open 24 hours.

The noise wasn't more than an average house party, but thats pretty late. With reports of trespassing on that block this week, I think it's worth keeping an eye on. Of course, Jane Jacobs would say those are the eyes.

I have been there twice and extremely happy both times. The owner/operator is a really good guy and great for the community. First time had the fried chicken platter, better than Butters! Second time had the burger and is probably one of the best take-out burgers I have ever had. Today I plan on trying the ribs, he says he uses a three cook method on them, can't wait. I highly recommend this place but get ready to loosen your belt, delicious and fattening just the way a southerner likes it.
