Default What do you think of the splotchy Barnes?

I had to do a double take to be sure that the splotchy limestone wasn't actually shadows being cast by adjacent trees.

It's an odd choice. I don't really like it.

I noticed the scheme yesterday, I had to do a double take as well. I don't know yet, It's going to depend alot on what the rest looks like. It's an interesting idea, but not sure if it comes off well.

I immediately thought of the Nuclear Reactor Cooling towers in Japan. Almost the same idea, but I thought theirs was cool, Barnes, not so much. Yet.

I thought it was unfinished? That's the finished look?

I think you are talking about the paint job on the Fukushima Daiichi reactor containment buildings [or, what's left of them]. The Fukushima plant doesn't have giant cooling towers because they used a multiple closed loop cooling system, so no need for those giant 3 Mile Island-esque concrete toruses.

Construction is ongoing but the limestone facade facing the parkway is nearing completion. What you see is the final look.

Hmmm, well, I was driving by and didn't look real close. I'll have to check out a little more before passing judgment. I just assumed it was not finished.

Im going to wait until the finished product to comment. Lot of moving parts here , have a feeling this will end up being a spectacular compliment to the Parkway.

I caught a bit of the evening sun lighting up the facade last night and it looked like the whole building glowed gold.

it was only for a second but I thought if the whole building is designed to do that it will really be spectacular.

i think overall it seems like a nice choice to blend with the other tan limestoney buildings on the parkway (Rodin, Franklin Institute, Library)while still looking more modern....but will have to see the end result.

Nothing is going to look good when its surrounded by dirt, mud, chain link fences, earth movers and gravel. When this project is finished it will be a world class addition.

I think it will look good - the stone is kind of interesting to me.

Also, let's not forget that this is replacing what once was a jail on the parkway (that looked like a jail). Not that it should lower our standards, but man... I'm happy to see just about *anything* else there besides the old building.

(BTW, the carpenter's union was picketing the site today. I hope they all caught pneumonia.)

    Other work by them.

    Ugly.

and they only cut down most of the trees to do it!

Don't even start me on the utter lack of visitor parking.

It's "green" to screw Fairmount with the parking demand.
I'm not seeing all these supposed bikes in all these million dollar bike lanes.

And you wonder why we're all NIMBYs there...

Seriously though, this Barnes design is an atrocity on multiple levels.

There's enough parking on the parkway meet the needs of the cultural institutions there. There's even room to add more parking by removing travel lanes; there is no way that all of those travel lanes make sense, whereas adding more parking on the perimeter of Center City would probably be a good thing.

I believe the intent is to recall the original building, which can look quite splotchy.

A function of age and natural effects is imitated to become a manipulative design. I'm sure theres a connection with impressionistic light effects as well, but overall, it seems intellectually superficial.

Perhaps. TWBT's idea is to recreate as much of the experience of the original building as possible, without moving the a$$hole neighbors to the Parkway.

    HA!

Could you imagine what these same architects might design for the Vogel collection?
