Default NE Corner Juniper & Locust, what's up?

Just passed this corner building today and noticed chain-link fences all around it. I can't imagine they are planning on demolition, but then that's what I thought about the buildings at 10th & Chestnut in 1993.

Oh god I hope not! I was just under the impression that they were cleaning or renovating it.

What happened in 1993? Was that when the Jeff hospital went up there?

This is what I meant about 10th & Chestnut circa 1993. The lady in the candy store there told me "No, they won't tear them down, they're protected". I haven't been by the Juniper & Locust corner since then, but I'm sure you're right and it's just some maintenance.

Is this where Jefferson is or the parking garage? These are some cool old buildings but I don't know if I'd compare them to the mansion on Juniper and Locust.

When I walked past it on Sunday it didn't seem like a demolition site to me. Seemed more like there was repair scaffolding over the sidewalk you can walk under. Doesn't strike me that's what they do for demolition sites. Beautiful old building.

    Not a demolition.

If that was actually a demolition Inga Saffron would be all over that.

The parking garage. Until the new building at 11th and Locust that was about all Jefferson built for several decades.

And before it was a garage it was a surface lot, right? I think I've seen some pictures from the other side of the block.

@boblee - where did you find that picture?

The garage is on the SE corner of 10th and Chestnut. The lot is on the NE corner of 10th and Sansom.

Right now Jeff is planning to construct a new ambulatory care facility in that surface lot, and turn 10th St from Sansom to Walnut (across from the ER, the east side of the street) into a park space in 15-20 years.

Yeah, but that garage is new. A few years ago that entire block was a surface lot if I remember correctly.

The new construction there will be nice. And another park, always a plus. Jefferson is really shaping up that area.

(Disclaimer: I work for Jeff, at least for the next week and a half)

Jefferson gets lot of crap from urbanists for their super blocks, and I can certainly see that. The south side of Chestnut between 11th and 10th isn't a joy to walk down, and the 60s-70s Soviet-inspired construction meant lots of huge buildings and concrete.

But the past few years they've definitely gone in a better direction. Almost all the sidewalks around the campus are new and clean and level, and the concrete at 11th and Locust is now a nice green space outside the Hamilton building, and ground-floor retail is mixed in. I also don't think the Jefferson sign on the Edison (nee PECO) building is as awful as Philly Skyline made it out to be.

Yeah, I never really got that sign. I mean if you're being flown in on a helicopter, are you really gonna think, "Oh, I'm going to Jeff!" and immediately forget about your knife wound?

Though I think it would have been cool if it had been more unique a la PSFS of PNB. Kind of Gotham-ish. It's just a boring plastic sign like something you'd see on a Hampton Inn.
