I have a Sangean WFR-20 Internet Radio that does this, albeit very poorly. I'd love something like squeezebox etc. but without streaming from a PC. I've got all my media on a network drive that is too old to have UPnP on it.
You don't need UPnP to map or use a network drive on your LAN. I keep all my music on my server. About the only thing I can think of why you *might* need UPnP is to map to a remote drive outside your router/firewall - which is an extremely bad idea from a security perspective. In fact, the very first thing you should do with a router or firewall is disable UPnP capability.
